While in Honolulu, I noticed that many cars had the “Live Aloha” bumper sticker. Naturally I was curious to see what did “Live Aloha” mean. Turns out that “Live Aloha” is a campaign to spread the aloha spirit which is greatly valued in Hawaii.

Just to give you an idea of life in Honolulu; people actually wait for the “Don’t Walk” sign to turn to “Walk”. (I will admit it was hard for me not to just walk across the street when no cars were coming so I learned to be patient and actually wait for the “Walk” sign to appear.) The average speed limit is about 25 miles per hour and people actually obey it. When the sun rises, people are out on the beach surfing, walking, running or doing some type of activity before heading to work. I did some research on what “Live Aloha” means and here is what I found at http://www.ealoha.com/livaloha.htm :
* A stands for AKAHAI, meaning kindness. *
* L stands for LOKAHI, meaning bring unity. *
* O stands for OLU`OLU, meaning politeness. *
* H stands for HA`AHA`A, meaning humbled. *
* A stands for AHONUI, meaning enduring. *
ALOHA
Respect all elders and children.
Leave places better than you find them.
Hold the door. Hold the elevator.
Plant something.
Drive with courtesy. Never drive impaired.
Attend an event of another culture.
Return your shopping cart.
Get out and enjoy nature.
Pick up litter.
Share with your neighbors.
Create smiles.
Create a list and share it.
You don’t have to be a politician,
Or the president of a company,
Or a famous doctor,
To make everyone’s life better.
Sometimes the smallest things make
the biggest difference.
