Happy Earth Day!!!!

by Nadia on April 22, 2009 posted in Green

Today is Earth Day! Actually, it is the 39th anniversary of Earth Day. For those who do not know much about how Earth Day started, here is the story: Fred Dutton originally suggested the idea of Earth Day in a memo to President John F. Kennedy back in the early 1960′s. However, nothing was done at the time. Then, in 1969, there was a huge oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.

U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, upon seeing the spill, was so angered by what had happened that he went back to Washington and decided that April 22nd would be Earth Day. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. Earth Day is now celebrated world-wide as awareness of global warming has spread, thanks to people such as Nobel Peace Prize Winner Al Gore and many others.

Actually, the first book to be written that brought awareness to the reality that the use of synthetic pesticides damages the environment was Silent Spring which was published in 1962 by Rachel Carson. This book lead to the nationwide ban on DDT and other synthetic pesticides. The book was also the inspiration behind the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Goes to show you that one person can make a difference.

 SilentSpring

While researching for the topic of Earth Day, it came to my attention that some people feel that restrictions on pesticides create interference with economic freedom. I read many articles where some people really feel that being environmentally friendly is dangerous because it limits the opportunity to earn money. One article even stated that Silent Spring is one of the most harmful books of the 20th century. How can a book showing that toxic chemicals are harmful…be harmful?

Being green is becoming more popular with each year. As you know, I am a big supporter of the environment and of being as green as possible. We take our planet for granted and are unaware that our actions really do have an impact on it. So I want to do my part to help spread awareness.

As you may recall, back in March, I had the opportunity to interview Renée Loux. I am happy to report that she now has a monthly column called Green Living with Renée Loux in Women’s Health Magazine where she writes about green products. This month she focuses on some very great eco-friendly exercise products which you can read about here . She also has a section in Women’s Health Magazine called Green Living Q + A with Renée Loux, where readers can ask Renée various questions on what they can do to help the environment. To read this month’s questions and answers, please click here.

To do our part in keeping the planet happy, here is a list of some of the things we do at the Happy Lotus household:

  • Use eco-friendly detergents like Seventh Generation dish soap etc.
  • Recycle whatever our township allows
  • Keep the water off while brushing teeth and soaping up in the shower
  • Put our computers on stand-by when not in use during the day and off at night
  • Turn off lights when not in use
  • Use canvas reusable shopping bags when buying groceries
  • Buy organic produce and products
  • Use the Green Pan and stainless steel pots for cooking
  • Use re-usable containers to store our food
  • Use a website host that is 100% Powered by Certified Green Renewable Energy Sources – Host Papa
  • Eat only vegetarian/vegan food (did you know that it takes about 5,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of meat?…It only takes 25 gallons for a pound of wheat. Check out this page for more information.)

For more advice regarding how to green your home, I highly recommend reading Easy Green Living by Renée Loux. It is the encyclopedia on going green.

Feel free to share what you do to help protect the environment!

Happy Earth Day to you all!

Lovely post and so full of purpose and inspiration. I liked how you described what you do to contribute to being green. I love and am inspired and awed by nature. It makes me want to cry to see us so crassly destroying it. I’m a huge believer in freedom and that includes economic and business freedom. But polluting is not freedom. To send your pollutants onto another is property damage and a violation of basic rights. You are not free to poison others. Thanks for reminding everyone about earth day!

Nadia,

Thanks for focusing on Earth Day! I was surprised about the backlash against a book that accurately reported the facts about pesticides.

I like your ideas about being green, but I think we still need a federal energy policy that reduces carbon emissions and helps great a green economy. For instance, there needs to be a price floor on oil so that companies that make long-term invest in alternative energies know that there will be a profit if they succeed. Thomas Friedman makes a good argument for this in his book Hot, Flat, and Crowded.

YAY! Happy Earth Day! Thanks for sharing the background of the day because I never thought about it. I just sort of accepted it as if it were Christmas or something. And thanks for the green tips. You can never have too many of those!

As I’m sure you know, Disney’s Earth movie is coming out today. Are you planning on seeing it? It looks pretty good (a lot like the Planet Earth films) but I’m not sure if I’ll really get around to it.

Have a grea Earth Day everyone! :)

Happy Earth Day!

Thank you for posting the tips that you use to be more green. I’m always on the lookout for more things that I can do, and there’s a few things here that I want to try, especially the reusable shopping bags and the eco-friendly cleaners. I’ve seen those in the store, but was skeptical about their cleaning prowess. But with your recommendation, I’m in!

Nadia, a wonderful post as always! I like that you throw in some non-conventional things to do, which go beyond the usual three or four the mainstream media always spit out. The idea of a “green” web host had never even occurred to me, but it’s an interesting one!

Thanks for sharing yet another wonderful piece of writing with us. :)

Thanks for the useful post and green tips. There are so many easy things we can do for the environment that can have a big impact when enough people do them. In addition to some of your suggestions, I also have stopped using plastic drinking straws (restaurants love to overuse them) and disposable pens.

Nadia April 22, 2009 at 11:03 am

@ Stephen – I totally agree with everything that you wrote. I think some people are unaware that their actions do impact the environment. Of course, there are some who are aware but simply do not care. However, I really believe that the majority do care so there is hope! :)

@ Roger – I love your suggestion about the federal energy policy. So far President Obama has really been doing more than the previous President to help the environment. Who knows, maybe such a policy is in our future! BTW, that Friedman book is on my lits to read. :)

@ P.P. – You are welcome and I am happy that the post provided some insight as to how Earth Day came to be! :) As for the movie, I am planning on checking it out.

@ Jay – Yay…you’re in!!!! Woo hoo!!! :)

@ Thomas – Thank you so much for all your support! It means so much to me. :) Hope the suggestions are of some benefit!

Sherri (Serene Journey) April 22, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Hi Nadia,
Great post and happy Earth Day to you! We do a fair number of things you have on your list and we’ve also changed as many light bulbs as we could to CFL, we make our own baby food (saves on all those tiny glass jars), we wash our clothes in cold water, compost in the summer and donate a lot of our unwanted/unused treasures to goodwill. They’re little things but they add up and one person certainly can make a difference.

Glad you like the post! Yes, one person sure can make a difference. Thank you for sharing what you do to help the environment. :) I especially love the light bulb suggestion and making your own baby food. Nothing beats having natural home-cooked food!

Happy Earth Day to you!

I never quite knew the origins of the day; so thanks for sharing it here! Most certainly, all of us can do our part to taking care of Earth. I second the idea of saving electricity whenever we can!
