The Radio Within

by Nadia on April 29, 2009 posted in Guest Posts,Happiness

Last week I was sitting in a local Starbucks waiting for a friend. There was one person sitting to my left and one to my right. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing. I was able to do some writing with great ease. A few minutes later, some guy walked in and all of a sudden the energy of the place fell flat.

His whole aura was just negative. Please know that I say this as an observation not as a judgment. We have all had days when we were not our usual selves. Anyway, the guy got his drink, sat down next to the person on my right and started talking to her. He asked her what she was working on and all kinds of other questions. He then started to loudly proclaim what he did for a living. He was not a happy person at all. Within a few minutes, I could not write anymore. The ease of writing all of a sudden dissipated.

So I stopped writing and began looking online at whatever came to mind. Eventually, the guy left and the whole energy of the place shifted to how it was before his arrival. And guess what? I was able to write again with ease.

Whether you are spiritual or not, we all know that each person has a certain vibe about them. Some people are a joy to be around and others are not. You do not even need to talk to someone to get a sense of their energy.

 BroadcastPerson

We are each like a radio transmitting what we think and feel to whomever comes near us. I have had experiences where I went to meet someone and I was all happy but after meeting them, had all the joy sucked out of me. I also have had the opposite happen.

The original meaning of the word “charisma” is “to recognize the Christ within you”. The concept being that the Christ within you, is the divine energy that exists in each one of us. So when you see charismatic people, they are in touch with the divine that exists within them and that is why they can charm as many people as then can.

A good example of this skill is President Obama. Many people who have met him say that he exudes charisma. Some people believe that only a few have the power to be charismatic, I disagree.

We each have the divine within and we each have qualities that make us special. It is up to us to discover those traits and master them. We all have the potential to have auras that spread love and happiness. Just remember that there is a radio within you and it is up to you to choose which program you want to broadcast.

Note: Today, I have a guest post at Write to Done, which is another blog that I absolutely love . WTD is a blog that is primarily focused on the art of writing. The title of the post is: Writer’s Block…A Thing of the Past. Special thanks to Mary for allowing me the opportunity to have a guest post on her blog.

Nadia,

Insightful post! I like your broadcasting analogy – it’s so true.

I feel re-energized when I meet people with “charisma”. Just watching Obama give some of his speeches brought tears to my eyes.

This is an amazing phenomena, and I have noticed it too. It’s almost a physical field you can sense.

Another thing I have noticed: If I am unaware of the ‘frequency’ of other people, it’s probably because my mind is wrapped up in thought and I’m too busy broadcasting agitation and preoccupation. If I’m calm, it is easy to sense.

I don’t know about President Obama, but I met his wife Michelle once, and she just exuded warmth and positive energy. She was just a really nice, really friendly, really amazing woman.

For a long time, I’ve been aware of how other people’s energy affects me. I can often tell a lot about a person after just spending a few minutes around them., and I usually know if I want to spend any MORE time around them.

I’m only just now starting to recognize how my energy affects others, though, and trying to keep my “vibes” up around other people, or at least grounding myself more often when I’m feeling low, so as to not disturb others.

I suppose that’s because I’m (finally) becoming a lot less self-centered. EEEK! I’m growing up! Somebody save me!! :)

When I was unaware I believed I had to show my feelings to be authentic . I have since grown up (a bit) and realised even if I feel down I must find a way to project something positive. Guess what? The people around me are much happier, they don’t need to feel my doom and gloom. A small thing but it took and still takes a lot of self-discipline.

A carefully thought out post – really enjoyed reading.

@ Roger – I am the same way when I see Obama give a speech. The speech he gave when he won on election night, had me in tears. On Inauguration Day, I cried so much because I was so happy and he is so awesome. He just has that aura about him and if you read about his life, you can see how he became the cool dude that he is today!

@ David – Very true. The more calm we are, the easier it is to sense other people’s frequency. Now that REM song is in my head!!!! :)

@ Jay – You are so funny! You are becoming wise, my friend!!! I prefer wise over growing up because I don’t want to grow up! :)

@ Paisley – Thank you for sharing your experiences because it is another example of how what we feel effects those around us! :)

Chania Girl April 29, 2009 at 10:14 am

I enjoyed this post very much, Nadia. It is so spot on. Many of us have experienced this at some point in our lives–I know I have. I’ve also experience what it is to be the transmitter. Like it or not, I’m “cursed” with a strong radio frequency~ my energy is often far too easily detected, even when I may be doing my absolute best to “keep the volume down.” While this can be a great phenomenon when I am feeling up, it is not so great when I am feeling down.

I am still learning what works for me as far as modulating this so that, even when I am down or out of sorts, the people around me aren’t so strongly affected. I’ve found that positive affirmations and mindfulness (being in the moment with that person) help me do this more easily. I try to center.

Thank you for another great post.

Wonderful post, Nadia; so true. And congrats on your guest post at Write To Done!!

I’ve discovered the same thing Paisley did: that I don’t have to share ALL of myself and what is going on with me in order to be authentic with others. I can choose the parts of “me” that I want to share in order to make their experience better. There are a few people who I can unburden the good, the bad and the ugly on, but the rest of the world doesn’t need to take on all my issues as well as their own. Choose to share the positive.

=-)

@ Chania – Mindfulness is an awesome technique to use. Like you, I can be intense in my energy. I have struggled with being intense because I felt bad about it but I am learning to work with it and mindfulness has done wonders for me! I hope it does the same for you! :)

@ Lisis – Thank you for the congrats! I appreciate it! As for what you do when dealing with people is awesome because it is wise to know what to share with whom and when. Not everybody has that belief. So good for you! :)

Positively Present April 29, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Love the analogy here. It’s great to think that we all have different stations within us — happiness, joy, fear, anger, hatred, love, etc. — and it’s up to us to choose which channel to turn to. Great post! And I’m going to head over to WTD to check out your guest post too. :) Congrats on getting so many guest posts. That’s awesome!

Loved this one! I think of those people as Dementors, like in the Harry Potter books. But something very strange happens to me when I’m around energy drainers. Sometimes I suffer what happened to you in Starbucks, but in the last few years I’ve been able to sense which of those people are only going through a temporary phase. The minute I sense that, it often attracts them, as if they know that my listening might be able to help. I sometimes end up drained, but with temporarily down people, it’s often all they need to turn their day around.

The guy you heard, however, sounds like one of those folk who’ve worn that track into their neural pathways. They often need therapy or coaching to have someone point out what’s coming across from their energy field.

If you ever sense that I’m coming across like that in my writing, Nadia, please tell me!! People have writing auras too.

@ P.P. – Thank you for the well wishes! I really appreciate it. :) May we all always send out signals based on love and gratitude!

@ Janice – I highly doubt you will ever come off negatively in your writing because it is obvious that you write from the heart!
I loved how you mentioned the Dementors because that is a great use of symbolism. Some people truly do drain others but the interesting thing is that they are unaware of it because they are in so much pain. No one consciously wants to drain another.

Carole - Rejuvenation Lounge April 29, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Great post.

I must say I am enjoying your blog after only having recently discovered it.

You write from the heart which flows through into your writing.

R. Buckminster Fuller says 99% of the universe is invisible. I believe this is true. Its not what you see or hear from people but the unseen quality of energy that leaves their body. This of course to all sorts of places and situations and not just people.

Here’s a quote from Bucky:

Ninety-nine percent of who you are is invisible and untouchable.

Peace, love and chocolate

Hi Carole,

Thank you so much for the kind words. I really do write with the intention of coming from the heart. It is great to know that it shows.

Buckminster Fuller has so many awesome quotes. The man knew his stuff! :)

Sunny Jamiel April 29, 2009 at 6:17 pm

You are very right in your observation and it does happen so. I am usually amazed at how people disregard such strong signals. Maybe we should open up a Spiritual Radio Repair Shop or something. :)

Nadia April 29, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Hi Sunny,

I think people are unaware of the signals because they have so much on their mind. Years ago, I had a pair of socks in my hand which I meant to put away. I was consumed with what was happening in my life at that time and mind was full of thoughts that I ended up putting the socks in the freezer without realizing it.

So people just are unaware because they just do not know any better especially if they are having to deal with issues of fear or anxiety or physical pain or whatever. :)

Tess The Bold Life April 29, 2009 at 6:51 pm

I’m very aware of others vibes and like to get away as soon as I can when they’re not good. Wayne Dyer said in one of his books he quit going into bars because of the bad vibes. I remember when I read that how much sense it made.

Nadia April 29, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Hi Tess,

I remember reading that too and could relate to it because I have never liked the energy of bars or clubs. Thank you for the reminder! :)

Vikum April 29, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Hi Nadia :) ,
A great one. Actually from every person there emits a power which can feel the others. It may be positive or negative. I think that’s why sometimes we don’t like some people at first sight even without having a proper reason.

Hey, your post at “write to done” is really awesome. Love it very much. I read that and left my comments there. C ya again :)

Hi Vikum,

Thank you so much for leaving a comment here and at my guest post. That is really kind.

You also made a great point about how our reaction to a person when we first meet them is based on the kind of energy that they give off. :)

Angie April 29, 2009 at 10:00 pm

WOW, I have been there! I am a very sensitive person but you are right- there are those people that everyone can sense when they are having an off day.
When I was practicing massage, I had to center myself before each client and become grounded so I would not take the energy from the last client into the next session with me. It took me at least a year to figure out how to not let others energy effect me so profoundly. I would actually get neck aches after working with clients with neck problems!
I also think on the days we are not grounded, peoples’ energy effects us a lot more.
Great blog! This is my first time here, love your posts!

Hi Angie!

Welcome to Happy Lotus! I am glad that you found your way here and that you are enjoying the posts.

I know what you mean about the importance of being centered so that the energy of others does not effect you. Good for you for having been able to figure out how to not be effected by the energy of your clients. That is awesome! :)

Lance April 30, 2009 at 5:05 am

Hi Nadia,
It is so good to be here this morning. I feel uplifted, like your helping to make sure the “radio within” me is on the right channel. And it has me thinking about the characteristics I exude when I’m out and about – and the reflection of how I truly live my life that they are. I love the thought of charisma as the “Christ within us” – just thinking about this puts me more in a state of goodness. Nadia, thanks so much for writing this – what a great way to start my day today – radio tuned in – and ready for sharing that with all the others my path with cross!

Hi Lance,

When I first read that the original meaning of charisma was “the Christ within us”. I was floored. It just somehow made so much sense to me and I really began to be fascinated with the concept. So I can relate to what you are feeling. Isn’t life awesome? :)

Chris Edgar | Purpose Power Coaching April 30, 2009 at 2:02 pm

Thanks for this post. I think we rarely give each other credit for being as empathic as we truly are. People sometimes say it’s “selfish” to seek out happiness in your life, but when you do that you influence how others feel around you as well.

Nadia April 30, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Hi Chris,

Isn’t it amazing how threatened people can get when you tell them you want to be happy or that you are going to seek out your happiness? I have seen people respond to such concepts with such violence, it is mind boggling.

jack woodyard May 1, 2009 at 2:16 am

Too true. People see us as we see the world. As a father, I know that if I’m in a bad mood it affects my whole family and all I have to do is choose to be a positive person, and use positive words, and wa la the Wa is back in the domicile. “Smile and the world will smile with you”
