Happy News (June 7, 2009)

happynewsheaderTo start this week’s edition of Happy News, President Obama headed to Normandy, France, to commemorate the anniversary of D-Day. According to Carl M. Cannon, President Obama went there to send the following message: “It is that freedom is not free, and that democracy is worth fighting for — that sometimes human rights are worth dying for.” Click here to read the full article.

As some of you may know, cows emit methane gas when they belch and methane is the second highest emission (after carbon dioxide) that is a factor in global warming. The average cow belches 200 to 400 pounds of methane per year. One farmer in Vermont found a way to help reduce that number by simply changing the kind of feed that he gives his cows. Who knew cows could be so dangerous to the environment? Here is the full story.

Finally, the best news of all is that it is now fashionable to be healthy. One columnist recently wrote that now more and more people are talking about all the healthy things they do as a way to show how cool they are as opposed to bragging about getting very drunk. It is great to know that more and more people are discovering the importance of health.

Hi Manish,

So what part of India are you from? My husband and I lived in India for six months back in 2004. It is a beautiful country. I know what you mean about the respect that many religions have for animals especially the cow. I have been a vegetarian for 21 years and vegan for the last 8 years. As much as I love being a vegetarian, not many people agree with that kind of lifestyle and that is their choice which they are entitled to have. Each person has to do what feels right to them. :)

Hi Nadia,

I love the health story. I value my health very much, it’s one of those things that really makes a difference in the way I feel. So – I’m all for people who exercise, eat right, and generally just live a healthy lifestyle!

Hi Lance,

I am not surprised that you value you health especially since you once told me that you rode your bike to work. Not many people do that. So yay for a healthy lifestyle! :)

Aw, dang it, and here I was hoping to wow you all with the number of margaritas I threw back last night! Seriously, I have found the health thing to be true but, word to the not-so-healthy: When bragging about all your “healthy” choices to look good, it’s easier for folks to believe you bike everyday and eat all-natural foods if you don’t rock up in a Hummer and order the burger and fries special … with a beer. :)

[Sorry, Nadia. Couldn't resist. Have had this happen to me quite a bit lately.]

Pres. Obama is a refreshing leader.

Poor cows–they do what they do; the problem is not cows, it’s our consumption that has encouraged a high cattle population.

Newsweek has a similar article on consumerism. Consumerism is about display–about the maxim “Look, I can afford to be wasteful.” Recent trends–and the new economy–is changing the face of consumerism to conscious living–but it’s still about display, about “Look, I’m spiritual/conscious/caring.” Whatever it takes…

Thanks for you perspectives–always interesting and intelligent!
