One of the amazing things about the human experience is that we so often look for answers outside of ourselves. Happiness, love and all the things we feel that give our lives meaning we somehow believe exist outside of ourselves. My mom was born Catholic, became an atheist and then discovered spirituality when I was a teenager. My mother really struggled with the concept of there being a God or some benevolent force that looked over all of us. She was not an optimist and struggled with depression for most of her life.
Each spiritual book gave her hope that things did happen for a reason and that the Universe was all loving. I always found this strange because to me it was so obvious. Because my mother wanted confirmation of the compassion of the Universe, she was always in search of some type of guru.
Each writer became an expert. Each person was viewed with the hope that they would settle the issue once and for all. She went to all kinds of groups in hopes of getting the answers. All she found were people also looking for the same external validation. I sometimes would accompany her and my optimistic nature would be of annoyance so I had to just be quiet all the time at such events.
Looking For Answers
When I met my Buddhist Master, everyone that my mom knew from her spiritual groups was shocked I had such an opportunity since I was considered an air head. I was shocked too because it was a dream come true in the midst of immense personal pain.
My mom looked to the monk I had met for answers but he just would never give her the answers she wanted. With each lesson I had with my teacher, I came to see that all the answers I wanted were really inside me. Spiritual awareness, on some level, is the realization that you already have everything you want but you have covered it up with your issues, ego and so on.
I tried to impart this to my mom and it never clicked. As much as being an optimist is a blessing, many people do not value what you say because many think that optimism is foolish and naïve.
For some reason, there is this belief that an intelligent person knows that life is tough and there is suffering. Cynicism is held by many to be a virtue of the wise. As much as my mother loved me, the doubt she had regarding the existence of God could not be alleviated by me or my experiences. Many times we look to other people to answer or solve our issues but no one can really do that for us. People can offer their point of view or suggest a book but ultimately, the answers to all your questions lie within you.
What spiritual books and teachers ultimately do is provide information but it is up to the reader or listener to digest that information and see how to apply it to their own life. When I was studying with my teacher, I had to read many books and answer many questions on the nature of God, the soul and so many other things. The training was rigorous but it was so much fun.

Don’t Give Your Life and Power to Another
Part of my education was to study other traditions and to recognize the unity that exists in each belief system. With each lesson and with each book, I was made more aware of the power that is within each one of us. With that knowledge, I was able to effectively deal with whatever I needed to deal with in my life. My spiritual education basically gave me the tools to understand myself and to understand life.
Sometimes, my Buddhist Master would have visitors and it was amazing to see how some people would react in the presence of someone so wise. They would ask him all kinds of questions and wanted predictions about their future. My teacher never went down that route despite the pleas or the numerous gifts that were placed at his feet.
I once asked him about that because I found it odd. He told me all kinds of things about myself and the future but to those who really wanted to know, he said nothing. He, of course, laughed for about five minutes when I asked him that question. Most of my questions incited such a response so by this time, I was used to it and just stood there letting him laugh to his heart’s content.
He then told me that the difference was in the intention with which each person was asking the question. He said that a true teacher is not meant to be worshipped or viewed as a path to salvation. That would be dangerous because you would be giving your life and power to another. A true teacher gives you the tools and then you do the inner work…you need to be your own guru.
Be Your Own Guru
He went on to tell me that enlightenment or the attainment of nirvana cannot be had by worshipping someone. He said that enlightenment is something that has to be achieved by the individual and the individual alone. You are responsible for the status of your life and to look to a teacher to save you, is stating to the Universe that you are not capable of taking care of yourself. A true teacher just helps you to see the world and is not meant to be viewed with attachment. As you can see, my Buddhist Master was a very wise man.
None of us are born knowing all the answers and part of the journey of life is to discover what this whole adventure means to us. We can search for those answers in books, churches, temples, mosques, self-help groups and so on. However, it is up to the individual to apply what they have learned. As my mother used to say: “you can take the horse to the water, but you can’t make it drink”.
You can read every self-help book there is and go to all the blogs there are that speak to your soul but ultimately, it is up to you to heal yourself. There is no need to worship or seek a guru, be your own guru and you will be amazed at what you will discover.

Ah Nadia, You’re the wise student of a wise teacher. I often feel the need for guidance and a teacher. However, interestingly when I truly need to learn something, it appears before me, in some form or another, a book, a conversation, a thought, a person. Guidance finds you.
It still is hard, to get out of the way but I try.
Your posts are getting really brilliant, every single time.
God bless
Uzma
Hi Uzma,
Learning to get out of the way is a hard one to learn but at least you are aware of what is happening. Don’t underestimate the value of awareness. And yes, guidance always comes and sometimes in unexpected ways. The trick is to recognize it!
Awakening is seeing beyond the story of the little me; but it quickly morphs into the story of spiritually advancing the little me. From what I see in my own experiences and in the people I work with, is that we desparately seek the magical secret that will finally make it all click–we seek it in ashrams in India, Buddhists monks, Eckhart Tolle, the LOA, ‘masterminding’, blog writers and everything else in the spiritual industry.
There is nothing wrong or right about these, and often some of this seeking can guide us, but this seeking is no closer to awakening than taking a walk in the park. The answer is much, much simpler and much, much closer to us than the complicated movements of seeking it outside.
Still, everyone has their journey, and it is always unfolds perfectly.

Hi Kaushik,
Each person has to do what works for them and each journey is unique. Some people awaken simply and some need more time. The beauty about life is that there is no set formula.
That must have been difficult with your mother being so different from you. This was an interesting read and I read it all, despite the fact that it’s really hard to see. (It comes up in Google Readere as light blue on white.)
“For some reason, there is this belief that an intelligent person knows that life is tough and there is suffering.” I would say, not for some reason, but for good reason. For example, my childhood formative years were a living hell, growing up with two violent, mentally ill parents. From an early age, I believed life was awful and there was always intense suffering, but only for those who were unlucky enough to be born into bad families, like me. After all, this was my reality. Still is, in many ways.

Hi Dot,
Welcome to Happy Lotus! Thank you for reading the whole article although it was a challenge. The quote you referred to was talking about the concept that happy people are viewed as being less intelligent than those that are not happy.
The interesting thing is that no one is immune from suffering and we each experience it. Some do have it worse but each person has experienced their own version of suffering. As for what you shared regarding your childhood, that must not have been easy. Like you, my childhood was not a childhood for a variety of reasons. So I know, to some degree, the difficulty of having a tough childhood. It definitely effects how a person sees the world.
Nadia:
I enjoyed this post and have been wrestling with my putting power into other people and books. At times, I have looked to others in hopes of being inspired, enlightened and motivated. To a certain extent, this is healty. But on the other hand, too much looking outward is not good, either.
I agree with you that the answer is within us…and it has taken me a while to learn this. Thanks for writing about this important subject.

Hi Tim,
The answers are definitely within and external sources should be viewed as a source of information which should be applied to one’s self. The problem is that sometimes we want an outside source to solve our problems for us and that is dangerous. We have to solve our own problems. Hope all is awesome!
Isn’t this the truth: “You can read every self-help book there is and go to all the blogs there are that speak to your soul but ultimately, it is up to you to heal yourself.”? That is absolutely true. No matter what you do, what you read, what therapist or guru you seek help from, it all comes down to what you choose. This is both awesome (we have control!) and scary (we have to choose!), but it is, for certain, the way it is. Great post, Nadia!

Hi Dani,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for the enthusiasm. I really appreciate it. Only we can heal ourselves and no one else. The outside sources educate us but in the end we have to do all the work.
Nadia,
You make an excellent point!
My Zen Sensei describes himself as a guide. He can point the way, but you have to take responsibility for traveling the path. Many people try to shift responsibility for their lives to some guru or even book. It never works and will actually send you in the opposite direction of realization.
He Zen Sensei recently asked me to stop reading Buddhist books. I decided to follow his advice, but I don’t automatically do everything he tells me to do. As you say, you have to be your own guru and judge for yourself.

Hi Manish,
Thank you so much. Have a great day too!
Hi Nadia,
“He said that a true teacher is not meant to be worshipped or viewed as a path to salvation. That would be dangerous because you would be giving your life and power to another. A true teacher gives you the tools and then you do the inner work…you need to be your own guru. “ I’m absolutely with you on this. That is why I’m never a religious person. I don’t believe in worshipping. Even if I do use the word, I use it only as a figure of speech.
Very enlightening post, Nadia!
Cheers~

Hi Mark,
Your comment reminds me of a quote I once read. It goes like this: religion is for those who have never sinned and spirituality is for those who sinned but then managed to come back. I don’t consider myself religious either but I am definitely a spiritual person and I think relying on oneself is an aspect of spirituality. Hope all is awesome!
I need to get this message today. thank you!!
Hi Glad!
Welcome to Happy Lotus! You are most welcome!
Sometimes (such as is the case with this post), you write such great stuff…and I really want to comment on it, but then I realize that I have nothing particularly useful or insightful to say. So, as I often have to do with Ian…this is just me telling you that I enjoyed reading this.

It takes a lot of confidence to be your own guru. I’m starting to think it must be a lifelong process.

Hi Paisley,
Everything of value in life, I have come to see, is a lifelong process. The learning never stops and if it does, that is really bad because stagnation is never good.
Hi Nadia
It’s been rough having to retrain myself not to go to Happy Lotus every day, but I’ve almost got the new schedule down! This was a wonderful read today. The importance of holding onto your personal power is worth repeating again and again. My heart goes out to you, Dot, and the rest of us who struggled with difficult mothers. My brother married a preacher’s daughter who, by my mother’s own admission, is the only person on earth who intimidates her. My mom’s fawning over this daughter-in-law is a cornerstone of all our family get-togethers. I don’t think she realizes how she gives all her power to this woman, how feeling intimidated by anyone is the same as relinquishing your power to that person.
Hope you have a great weekend, fearless one!
.-= Brenda´s last blog ..Oprah’s Lavender =-.
Hi Brenda,
It is always a pleasure to hear from you!
You are absolutely right, feeling intimidated is equivalent to placing your power into the hands of another. I am so happy you brought that up because it is so important. There is no need to feel intimidated by anyone. I have to write a post on that too. Thank you for the reminder!
I hope you have a great weekend too, my dear friend!
The title of this post caught me immediately. It felt like a reassurance. When things are confusing we do look “out” “there” for it to make sense, I have done just so recently– and exactly decided to be my own master and trust myself to discover my answers, my own truth. It does take work to step outside of yourself, in order to see inside yourself. Lovely timing for me with this post, just beautiful.
Hi Molly,
Don’t you just love it when the timing is just so perfect? I do and it makes me happy when it happens.
Good for you for deciding to discover your own truth! That is wonderful and it is a start of a very cool journey. Oscar Wilde said that the best love affair of all is the one that you have when you come to love yourself.
Nadia,
This reminds me of the conversation we had a week ago or so about my solitary path and my struggles and acceptance of it. Your words here are very remarkable and comforting to me and I thank you for them from the bottom of my heart. I believe that I am, quite literally, my own guru.
All the best,
Eric
Hi Eric,
You are welcome from the bottom of my heart.
Actually, I wrote this post a day before we had that conversation. BTW, that conversation helped me in many ways too. I will have to tell you about it later. And you are, definitely, your own guru!
Hope all is well, my friend!
Beautiful post, Nadia. I copied down one of your lines,
“You already have everything you want but you have covered it up with your issues, ego and so on.”
I like this line — I plan to refer to it often.
.-= kirwin´s last blog ..H.A.L.T. =-.
Hi Kirwin,
Thank you so much for your support and I am grateful that that line resonated with you. It means so much. Hope all is well with you and your family!
When I worked as a psychologist clients always wanted to give me too much credit. They were the ones who had to take what they learned from me and put it to work in their own lives. Therefore I was only the conduit they healed themselves.
I think this could also apply to internet gurus who make a lot of money and want to convince us to part with ours so we can be an instant success like them. Their copy is brilliant however they always have a small disclaimer somewhere saying very few people go on to make millions.

That is great that you did not let all that praise get to you. In my life, I have seen people forget that they are just a tool or the vehicle to help bring awareness or attention or whatever. Each person has the ability to heal themselves.
Hope all is well with you!
Great post. I love the message in this one. We are not meant to have all the answer, however, the answers are within our reach.
Thanks for the wisdom.

The answers are definitely within our reach. The problem is that we humans have a tendency to make things more complicated than they need to be.
Hope all is awesome!
We’re all students, and as the wisdom goes, when we’re ready, our teachers appear. Synchronicity sends guides when we need them – often in unexpected places or through pain. The trick is to be open, aware and not go searching. The people, blogs, books and places we resonate with are simply keys that unlock the answers we’ve always had inside.
Nice one, Nadia!
.-= janice´s last blog ..Connected and Encouraged =-.
Hi Janice,
I am still always amazed when I do not put much effort into something, it turns out far better than I could have ever expected. I have learned after so many years of trying to control outcomes, to just let go and be. It is truly much more fun and relaxing even if it applies to finding a guru!
Lovely!
I have always listened to my intuition, whenever someone tries to come across as a guru to others, this has always given me an uneasy feeling inside.
On some level I have always known that I do have all the answers (when it comes to my own self), other people, books, resources are just catalysts to my breaking open to the whole self I know I can be if I do the work.
Healing is about letting go~ not getting, attaining or finding it on the outside.
Thank you again for a wonderful post!
Hi Angie,
You are so right. Healing is all about learning to let go. Sometimes that is all that it takes…letting go.
Hi Nadia .. excellent post .. I liked the two women – different sides of the coin. We all need to look at things in a different light, often from another’s point of view .. and as you so rightly say the answers to our own life are within us.
That is such valuable information – thank you
