What Makes Somone Great?

by Nadia on July 1, 2009 posted in Books,Elephant Journal,Life,Psychology,Spirituality

Throughout time, there have been people who seemed to do the impossible. A few names come to mind: Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Dr. Martin Luther King. I have sometimes wondered what made such people so unusual.

Yes, they went against their comfort zones and pursued their dreams despite all the challenges and perceived hardships. Here is a passage from The Architecture of All Abundance which I would like to share with all of you:

“Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King all experienced doubts, fears, wounds, uncertainties. They took a stand for their new dream, however. They refused to accept the dreams they were raised with and they began dreaming, dreaming, dreaming others. In spite of the apparent futility, lack of funds or approval, or the opposition of others – in spite of all of this they dreamed. They did not take their support from the outcome; they took their support from the compelling necessity of their dream. Conceiving the dream, connecting to the passion, imagining it, learning to live in it, becoming the dream, taking it forward day by day – these created their new world, and inevitably drew to them all the resources and opportunities needed.”

When I first read that passage, I was interested in the concept that people we would call great had drawn to themselves the resources and opportunities that they needed to help them achieve their dreams. Initially, it sounded too simple. How could they have been able to do that?

MotherTeresa

With time, I came to see that how we look at the world is reflected back to us. So if I view the world as being cold and harsh, that will be my experience. If I look at the world as being full of abundance, that will be my experience, too.

I then looked at the people I know who have managed to defy the odds and noticed that they too have the same belief about life. None of them fall into the trap of thinking that dreams cannot come true.

Recently, two writers; Judy Rodgers and Gayatri Naraine wrote a book about their research into to why some people are great and others are not. The name of the book is Something Beyond Greatness.

SomethingBeyondGreatness

In the book, the two writers had a rough time in the beginning trying to determine how they would go about finding out what makes one person great and another not. They interviewed many people they thought were great but the result of those interviews made them realize that their quest was much more difficult than they anticipated.

Finally, through a series of discussions with many people, they were able to recognize some underlying themes. One of the first themes was that the people that we consider to be great, have always engaged in actions that were compassionate and caring. It is not as if they suddenly woke up one day and were great. Here is a passage from the book which relates to this point:

“It is not so much the quality of the action that distinguishes moments of greatness from lives of greatness. There are remarkable similarities in what we hear from those who have had a single moment of what we might call ‘greatness’ and those who have lived lives characterized as great. For those who have lived lives of greatness, there is a continuity that arises from a flow of benevolent actions throughout their lives.”

Another aspect that Rodgers and Naraine discovered which is common with people who have achieved greatness is the quality of humility. All of the people they interviewed who could be called great had a sense of humility about their actions and lives. They did not think they had done anything usual or extraordinary. In addition to their humility was the awareness that their actions were not created by themselves but that they were guided to them by a higher power.

The authors also discovered that in addition to all the other qualities that I mentioned above, love was the motivation behind all the actions that we would deem to be great.

As they continued on with their research, they came to notice that greatness was not such a rare thing after all. Here is a passage that I think sums it up perfectly:

“On rereading what we have written, we must finally conclude that greatness is not so rare after all. Greatness is always present in natural human coexistence, when we are not caught up in defending an ideology, a theory, or a political justification. Greatness is present in the nature of collaboration. Greatness is present when we mutually care for one another, when we listen to one another in mutual respect, and when we are open to mutual understanding. Greatness is naturally present, because love is the foundation of human coexistence.

What is rare are the circumstances in which life invites us to act free from ideologies, theories, or political commitments. In these circumstances we unconsciously accept the invitation and act instinctively from love. Most loving acts flow by unnoticed, but sometimes we are fortunate and we witness what should always be visible in human life – namely, that we are naturally loving beings. Ideologies, doctrines, and convictions are the bane of our existence. They trap our intelligence and blind our souls.”

So true. Greatness does indeed come from caring for others and truly giving.
Coincidentally my next article is on abundance and how great people arose from lack to abundance, by believing, acting and giving.

Hi Uzma,

I think once someone achieves some level of inner peace and/or self-love, then they are drawn to help others. We are all truly brothers and sisters. :)

Hi, Nadia!

That last paragraph really summed it up beautifully in my mind. It’s not that greatness is so elusive, but rather our ability to act out our greatness (free from the trappings of an egoic mind) which seems so tricky.

I also found it rather interesting that the authors struggled at first to convey this topic — it was comforting to me (reflection, reflection, reflection!).

Have a super day!

Hi Megan,

The reflecting never ends! :) The more I see, the more I reflect. So it is a constant journey! Hope all is awesome!

I love that all that is great about you expressed itself in this post. I loved that line above; it’s a universal truth that ca be applied from everything from friendships to the way we choose to blog.

Thanks, Nadia! Some books worth adding to the book list!

Hi Janice,

The more I see of life and the world, the more I realize that it truly does all boil down to love. Love is and should be the motivator in all that we do. Granted, this is easier said than done but it is possible.

As for the two books, they are both awesome! :)

When I was young, I had a desire to become a great _____ . I held this desire for a while and even prayed about it in my own youthful way. One day the realization hit me like a lightning bolt: I didn’t want to be ____ so much as I just wanted to be great. It was an incredibly humbling experience and taught me, right there, to pursue what I love and pursue it with all my heart. Only in this way would I be happy. But to pursue greatness for greatness sake? I would miss everything!

Your post today highlighted this theme (along with many others, of course): the truly great people we have known or known of have not sought greatness and are living examples of humility. They serve others more than they serve themselves. It’s a valuable lesson.

Hi Chania Girl,

I think one reason why so many of us want to be great is because we want to feel better about ourselves. We think the attention will bring a sense of inner peace and/or self-love. As you said, usually those who become great were not intending to be great, it was a by-product of their work or desire to make the world a better place. :)

Hi Manish,

Hope all is well with you in Mother India! Yes, there is definitely more to life than just money and food and so on. I think people like Mother Teresa and Gandhi and King are examples of the potential that exists in each of us if we only get rid of all our issues. :)

Tess The Bold Life July 1, 2009 at 2:53 pm

I thing we can only witness and see great people because we have greatness inside of ourselves. Mother Teresa had 3 pennies to her name when she was 14 years old and had the dream on the train to begin a charity. She was laughed at by her elders in the Catholic church. She went on her way and did it anyway telling them she had more than 3 pennies. She had 3 pennies and God. The rest is history.

Mother Teresa has always said doing small things daily is as good as doing very big things once in a while.

I went and read the twitter article. Twitter drives me crazy! I’m still not sure what the purpose is unless someone wants to build a following in order to sell things to people eventually. Am I missing something?

Nadia July 1, 2009 at 6:09 pm

Hi Tess,

I agree with your thoughts on greatness and Mother Teresa is definitely a great example. I love how she had a dream on the train which guided her. I love stories like that. :)

As for Twitter, you can use in any way that works for you. I have developed many wonderful friendships due to being on Twitter. Many people do use it to make money. I use it to indicate when there is a new blog post and whatever else may come to mind. It truly is up to the individual.

Mark Foo | TheBigDreamer.com July 1, 2009 at 6:13 pm

This is a such lovely post, Nadia. Greatness can indeed be found in everyone of us if we would just believe we already have what it takes to be great. We do not need to be doing anything out of the world to be great. It just needs to be something you do with the intention of ‘doing good’, something you do to make a little difference to the world.

Cheers~

Mark

Hi Mark,

I definitely agree that greatness does exist within each one of us. Sometimes we lose sight of it because of all the brain noise that wants to focus on the negative. Hope all is awesome! :)

J.D. Meier July 2, 2009 at 3:20 am

You reminded me of the idea that you can think of the world as conspiring with you, or conspiring against you. I see people move mountains when they adopt the idea the world is conspiring with them.

Nadia July 2, 2009 at 9:39 am

Hi J.D.,

You are so right. I have noticed the same thing too. I am often amazed at how much people truly feel that the world is working against them. And no matter what you tell them so that they can see things from another perspective, they still are rooted in fear. It is truly amazing how much a person can accomplish when they know that anything is possible. :)

Katie West/The Levity Coach July 2, 2009 at 9:43 am

Nadia,
I love the idea that greatness comes from a sense of culmination, a deep building within ourselves that does not happen overnight but instead has been growing steadily as we cultivate our passions and dreams. So inspiring…and I love how it stems from our love and flows out into the world.

I am happy that you enjoyed the post and I also enjoyed how you described your thoughts. Nothing is better than love flowing out into the world. :)

Vi | Maximizing Utility July 2, 2009 at 11:20 am

An interesting post. I really enjoyed it, for it was very thought-provoking.

I’m not really sure how you define greatness. I feel that you are being tautological. You offer Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as examples of greatness and then go on to describe how great people are inherently compassionate, caring, humble, etc. But I feel that you are using those qualities to define greatness to begin with. So it’s rather circular.

I can think of some people who might be considered great, but don’t have any of those qualities. The first to come to mind is Usain Bolt, the Jamaican sprinter. With world records, he is definitely a great athlete. But if you saw him in the 2008 Olympics, I’d say he is the opposite of humble.

The problem is how you define greatness.

Nadia July 2, 2009 at 11:33 am

Hi Vi,

You raised an interesting point which is that we each have a different definition as to what makes someone great. I personally would not consider a sprint runner great. I would consider such a person very talented and very good at what he does but I would not consider it great as I would consider someone like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. So I guess it is all in the eye of the beholder. :)

Giovanna Garcia July 3, 2009 at 3:55 am

Hi Nadia
My feeling about greatness is it is like a seed. It is inside everyone of us and it is up to us give it sun and water to grow that seed of greatness within and help it become a big strong tree. Some of us work at it so much that they have a great big “greatness” tree and some of us have a good size tree. Than there are those that never even water the seed…
That is my 2 cents. :-)
Thanks for sharing, now I have to read the book.

I loved your description. It is so true and so beautiful. We each have a seed of greatness within and it is up to us to decide what to do with it. May more people realize that. :)

David Cain July 3, 2009 at 7:54 am

What is rare are the circumstances in which life invites us to act free from ideologies, theories, or political commitments. In these circumstances we unconsciously accept the invitation and act instinctively from love.

I really liked this part especially. It makes me wonder if we are all capable of greatness, but often circumstances prevent certain qualities in us from ever seeing the light of day. In fact, I know we’re all capable of greatness, you can see flashes of it in everyone, but nature and nurture do both change what we feel capable of. I suppose people whom we know as great found themselves in a place where their surrounding influences did not prevent them from following their hearts.

Hi David,

I am often amazed at how many people do not follow their hearts. Your comment makes an interesting point on how those we consider great simply went with what their heart told them to do. I think many people would be a lot happier and at peace if they actually did listen and follow their heart. :)
