In the course of my journey, I have always been fascinated with the concept that when you do something with love, your efforts will always be rewarded and recognized. I have always known this in theory but it is far more impressive when you have a first hand experience.
On June 2nd, I published a post entitled Conscious Capitalism which was about a new philosophy in business that recognizes the importance of being conscious while earning a profit. In that post, I specifically mentioned John Mackey of Whole Foods Markets. That post received many wonderful comments and to my surprise, Jeff Klein, Executive Director and Chief Activation Officer for FLOW, left a comment.
FLOW is the organization founded by John Mackey and Michael Strong which, according to their mission statement, is “dedicated to liberating the entrepreneurial spirit for good and focusing it on creating sustainable peace, prosperity, and happiness for all, in our lifetime”.
In his comment, Jeff suggested that in order to learn more about Conscious Capitalism, I should listen to Passion and Purpose and read Be the Solution. I emailed him to thank him for leaving a comment and asked if I could interview him. He kindly agreed.
One thing that I have learned in my years of being a writer is that whenever you interview someone, you should be as prepared as possible. So I followed Jeff’s suggestion and purchased the two items he mentioned before arranging the interview.
Passion and Purpose
The first item, Passion and Purpose is a double CD set of a lecture that John Mackey gave concerning Conscious Capitalism®. For those of you who do not know much about John, he opened a small supermarket called Whole Foods in 1980. It was a small store in Austin, Texas which was geared towards serving only healthy foods. Now Whole Foods has locations all over the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. In 2008, they had eight billion dollars worth in sales.
John did not know much about business prior to starting Whole Foods so he learned on the job. Eventually, he came to see that the purpose of a business has to evolve in conjunction with the others who are involved in the business. He came to see that in order to have a great company, the company has to have a great purpose and the purpose does not just mean profits. It also means helping to make the world better. Whole Foods, in 2007, gave away $14 million to charity.
One of the many highlights of Passion and Purpose is John’s belief that by having a business model based in conscious capitalism, we can help eradicate poverty. One of the organizations that John works with is Grameen Bank run by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus. Grameen Bank, according to John, is a perfect example of “liberating the entrepreneurial spirit for good” since it gives microloans to women who create their own businesses and get out of poverty.
Be the Solution
As someone who is a loyal shopper at Whole Foods, I was thrilled to know that I shop at a place which is run by a person who shares my belief that we all can help make the world a better place. However, my love and belief in Conscious Capitalism became even stronger when I read Be the Solution.
Here is the opening paragraph of the first chapter:
“Among the first teachings of the Buddha is the understanding that ‘mind is the forerunner of all things.’ If we believe it is impossible to make the world a better place, we will create a self-fulfilling prophecy. If we believe we can make a difference and set about doing so with a clear-eyed vision, passionate focus, persistence, and courage, then we can achieve extraordinary things.”
The whole book is a collection of essays by people who are running businesses based on the theory of Conscious Capitalism and it is a wonderful book which should be used in business schools around the world. Here is another passage from the book which I loved:
“FLOW proposes instead that those who desire to make the world a better place engage in lives of constructive action and meaningful work so that we can achieve those goals that have so long eluded us. If everyone who desires to make the world a better place takes positive action, instead of continuing on a path of impotent rage and frustration, we can quickly create sustainable peace, prosperity, and happiness for all.”
When I was finished reading the book, I contacted Jeff and interviewed him about FLOW. Jeff has been a part of FLOW for about three and a half years.
Learning More About FLOW
Here is a brief description of his biography from the FLOW website: He has worked in marketing, business development, and general management in the music, natural products, and fitness industries, building companies and talent including Private Music, Yanni, Seeds of Change, Spinning, and ChiRunning. He has consulted to and designed programs for The Esalen Institute, The National Geographic Society, GlobalGiving, the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and Peace Cereal (a brand of Golden Temple of Oregon). He also has his own marketing business called Cause Alliance Marketing.
FLOW was founded by John Mackey and Michael Strong who were introduced to each other by a mutual friend. Both men discovered that they shared similar beliefs and they both cared deeply about the environment and want to help make the world a better place via entrepreneurship. They created FLOW to help promote the concept that a person can be in business and yet still be conscious.
FLOW has been working on a variety of projects that are focused on three areas: Conscious Capitalism®, Peace Through Commerce® and Accelerating Women Entrepreneurs™. In my discussion with Jeff, we focused mainly on conscious capitalism.
Conscious Capitalism is comprised of three factors:
1. Purpose
2. Creating Value for all Stakeholders
3. Greater Kind of Leadership
Purpose is focused on the idea that a business has to bring value to the world. The purpose of a business is more than just a return of an investment and value to shareholders.
One aspect of purpose is passion. A person should be passionate about the work that they do. As Jeff told me, “it is like a fire that has been lit, it sustains you”.
Purpose also ties in with creating value. It is important that any business, regardless of the kind, provide value to the world.
Most businesses are run with the idea of keeping the shareholders happy. However, in a Conscious Capitalism model, the idea of stakeholder is what is considered important. A shareholder is someone who has invested in shares of a business. A stakeholder is a group that has a stake in the business. Stakeholder groups include customers, employees, vendors, investors, community in which the business is located, media and regulatory agencies. For a perfect example of this concept, click here to see the Whole Foods Stakeholder Model.
Both purpose and creating value for stakeholders are then brought to fruition when it comes to the point of having a greater kind of leadership. Leadership reflects a commitment to pursue the purpose of the business in conjunction with providing value to the stakeholders. A leader, under a Conscious Business methodology, is not focused on himself/herself but rather on fulfilling the purpose, creating value for the stakeholders, and bringing out the best out of everybody so that everybody benefits.

One of the many reasons why I wanted to interview Jeff was to help promote the concept of Conscious Business because, in light of the current financial situation, more people want to see businesses that are focused not only on making money but being aware of their actions.
Like anything in life, the best way for a concept to take hold, is by people voicing their desire to see more businesses that are invested in the community and not just in profits. This leads to the question of how to do that?
Jeff suggested that if people want to get involved with FLOW, they should learn more about Conscious Business and spread that knowledge by sharing it with others and joining one of the FLOW Activation Circles which are being developed in some locations in the United States. Most importantly, the best way to help spread the concept of Conscious Business is to start your own business that provides a great value to the world and has a purpose that resonates with you.
Here are some resources so that you can learn more about FLOW, Conscious Capitalism and Jeff Klein: www.flowidealism.org, www.causealliancemarketing.com, and www.workingforgood.com .
Also, please note that in September, Jeff’s first book, Working for Good: Making a Difference, While Making a Living will be published. The book is about combining business and spirituality. I will be sure to let you all know when it is available.
Special thanks to Jeff Klein for taking the time to talk to me and for being interested in my blog.

Wow! All of this is fantastic. Even if some people don’t want to start their own businesses, becoming – as you said – a conscious consumer helps to globally move us in a more balanced direction. As spiritual seekers, I believe we have to walk our talk (and yet how many of us are relentless in doing so?). We can’t just talk about peace, love and joy without shoring up everything we do around those things. That includes how/where we shop.
Thanks for taking the time to educate yourself more along these lines, Nadia, and in doing so, educate us. I’m going to check out the links you provided now!

Hi Megan,
Happy Monday to you!
I am so happy that you liked the post. Being a conscious consumer is really important and it is great that there are businesses out there that are run with the idea of making a difference. I think with the way things are now, hopefully more and more businesses will go in this direction.
Hope all is well!
This is really interesting. I don’t know much about the Conscious Capitalism movement, but I’m quite intrigued now. I’m definitely going to look into this more. Thanks for bringing it up in this post!

Hi Dani,
I did not know much about it either. Reading “Be the Solution” really was insightful as was listening to “Passion and Purpose”. It is a new movement but one that is gaining ground. Hope all is well!
I sell books on awakening and made a decision early to give away the books to anyone who can’t afford them, and return money to anyone who asks for a return. A marketing consultant wrote about my policies, using them as a counter-example of good marketing.
I take my inspiration from http://www.soallmayeat.org/.

Hi Kaushik,
Good for you for having such kind policies! May more people adopt such a way of doing business. Thank you for the link too. I checked it out and it is very interesting.
Hope all is as awesome as can be!
Nadia. I get a lot of hope from reading this. Having spent many years at the sharp end of ‘unconscious’ business I can really appreciate the difference! What you write about here is yet another sign of a shift in consciousness that’s even getting to the business world!
I’m going to have a look at those resources now!

Hi Ian,
I know what you mean. It is wonderful to see that a shift in consciousness is taking place in the corporate world. Interestingly enough, I think more and more people are feeling that shift. I was talking to someone yesterday about this whole thing and we both agreed that there is this change that is in the air these days. It is all kind of exciting. It’s a great time to be alive!
Wow, Nadia, this post really takes me back. I moved to Austin in August of 1980 and rented an apartment at The Eagle’s Nest, high on a bluff near Lamar and 6th. There were steps leading down the bluff, and if you crossed Lamar at the base of the steps you were at the Whole Foods market. The hippies hung out there, and talk about bohemian sheik! I wasn’t a hippie so I felt a bit out of place there, coming from the Safeway generation as I did. I remember seeing whole coffee beans for the first time there. The smell of coffee and scented candles filled the store. Isn’t it amazing what those old hippies have accomplished! Now they’re down in South America making loans to poor working women. Not to mention the fact that the burrito bar at the Palo Alto store has fed my son daily for the past year. He’s moving back to SF today and we’re going there tomorrow. I asked him what he’d do for food now. He said, “Don’t worry, Mom. There’s a Whole Foods three blocks away.” You’d like my boy.
We’re getting “there” slowly, Nadia, and you’re helping.
.-= Brenda´s last blog ..Funny Email =-.
Hi Brenda,
Thank you so much for providing a picture of what Whole Foods was like back in the 80s. Kind of amazing how much things have changed. I remember when I first became a vegetarian it was so hard to find things to eat because we did not have such a store in the area and regular stores did not have a natural foods section yet. There was no such thing as veggie burgers, you had to make them on your own and that was in the 90s! Things sure have changed.
One reason why we chose the development that we live in is because it is a five minutes drive to Whole Foods. So I have no doubt your son will find something to eat! Have a fabulous trip! And yes, we are getting there…one step at a time and thank you for saying that I am helping. That makes me feel really good!
I didn’t even know there was a Conscious Capitalism movement, but am now so hopeful after reading Jeff’s interview. If you have the chance to interview more conscious capitalists or CEO’s, I’l love to read about them. Hmmm…maybe you could even turn a compilation of interviews into a book. I’ll buy.
.-= Lori´s last blog ..Mentoring, Motivating, Mothering….and Teaching too. =-.
Hi Lori,
I am so happy that you enjoyed the interview! It is a growing movement and I am hoping that eventually it becomes a standard model of how to run a business. I think many people would love that to happen!
Good stuff.
I really like the phrase, engage in lives of constructive action. It reminds me too that we create things twice (in our mind, then in the world.)
.-= J.D. Meier´s last blog ..Find Your Unique 20 Percent Spike =-.
Hi J.D.,
Great point! We do create things twice. We are all truly more powerful than we realize!
Very interesting blog, Nadia, great information! I’m addicted to Whole Foods to begin with so this insight – and book recommendations – good timing (as always!) is perfect. I had not heard the term Conscious Capitalism before this but the whole concept of this business “plan” cannot help but be successful, as Whole Foods can testify eh? I’ve long felt that this is the United States of Greed, which (in my mind) accounts for the horrendous economic mess. The current situation never considers what is in the best interest of ALL, but rather how much can I amass in my OWN bank account. What a refreshing message, this Conscious Capitalism, and thank you SO much for sharing it!
.-= suzen´s last blog ..Boredom Cured — Dare You – Scare You! =-.
Hi Suzen,
You are so welcome! I was thrilled too when I first found out about Conscious Captialism and decided that I wanted to share the message with everyone. I think many people want a new model for business especially in light of all that has been happening with the economy. So I think the timing is perfect for Conscious Capitalism to lead the way!
In addition to Whole Foods, what are some examples of businesses that have followed the “flow” approach – and how did them implement these insights? Thank you
Hi Kare,
Welcome to Happy Lotus! Apologies for missing your comment. I have no idea how that happened. As for other businesses that have followed the FLOW approach, the one that comes to mind (besides Whole Foods) is Peace Cereals. A couple others are included in the book and do not come to mind at the moment. I do know that Patagonia clothing company is of a similar mindset. If any more come to mind, I will let you know.
This was a brilliant post and interview!! I shop at Whole Foods and never knew they originated from Austin, TX. I love the concept behind “Be The Solution.” I’ll be purchasing this book this weekend!

Hi Tabitha,
The book is really interesting so you should enjoy it. Kind of neat how so many of my readers shop at Whole Foods like me….maybe that is why we are all a bunch of happy people!
Thank you again for taking time to talk wiht me Nadia, and for your thoughtful posting, and thanks to all who commented. The encouragement goes both ways. As you can imagine (and as many of you know from your own work), forging new paths–especially against the grain, so to speak–is sometimes daunting. Connecting with community who share vision, passion, and intention is tremendously supportive.
I look forward to sharing my book with you and this community when it comes out Nadia, and I look forward to forging an ever-deepening conversation and co-creation of a new reality.
Yours on Working for Good, Namaste,
Jeff
Hi Jeff,
Actually, it is me who should be doing the thanking!
Forging new paths can definitely be a challenge but the rewards are well worth it. As you can see, many people are eager for the concept of Conscious Capitalism to take hold. So keep up the great work and may the goals of FLOW be accomplished sooner as opposed to later.
I look forward to when your book comes out and sharing it with all my wonderful readers. And you can definitely count me in on doing my part to help to further the conversation and co-create a new reality. I think we all want to do what we can to make the world a better place.
Have an awesome day!
Hi Nadia .. that’s so interesting .. I’ve made a note of the resources and will get them over here .. so I can listen to the Passion and Purpose, and read Be the Solution .. both of which I look forward to doing. It’ll be great to read more about Jeff and his Flow project, “liberating the entrepreneurial spirit for good”.
Great – I love hearing new information like this .. I’ll definitely been looking out for more from you and Jeff ..
Thanks – Hilary Melton-Butcher

Hi Hilary,
Thank you so much for all that you wrote and for supporting the concept of Conscious Capitalism and my blog too.
I hope you will enjoy the book and the CDs as much as I did. I think many people will be interested in this subject as more and more awareness is brought to the cause.
Hi Nadia,
This whole idea of conscious capitalism is such a wonderful model – one that sustains the business and helps the world in some way. And that’s pretty wonderful! Providing great value to the world with a purpose that resonates – that just sound like such a great place to be at! Nadia, thanks so much for sharing this information! And Jeff – thank you for being a leader in this whole concept and spreading the word about just how important and beneficial this idea is!

Hi Lance,
I am so happy that you enjoyed the article and for showing your support of the concept of Conscious Capitalism!
Hopefully it will become a standard business model sooner as opposed to later.
Wow! What an enlivened community. I am so happy to have found you all. Thank you for your comments Hilary and Lance. I am reminded of a quotation from Thoreau, which goes “Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there and I am prepared to expect wonders.”
I have great faith in good seeds, and I think we are finding and planting some very good ones here. With lots of good gardeners tending them.
I look forward to continuing and expanding this conversation.

What a beautifully crafted review, Nadia. Thank you! Reviews done with integrity are a real win/win. (Thank you, too, Jeff for your contribution to the world. It’s good to have a chance to thank pioneers ‘Personally’.) Right livelihood is a pleasure to witness as well as experience.

Thank you so much for the kind words. They are much appreciated. Your are absolutely right about how right livelihood is nice to witness as well as experience. May there be more businesses that follow the FLOW model.
Thank you Janice. I am encouraged by the growing legion of pioneers who are opening new ground for Conscious Business. It gives great cause for optimism.
Yours in Working for Good,

It’s wonderful to see the idea of conscious capitalism lighting the world on fire. I, too, have read “Be the Solution” and many other wonderful books about this new shaping of business as a force for good. And interviewed Michael Strong on my show at Planet Good Radio a few weeks ago. Jeff Klein is also scheduled to be on in September (to promote his book) and we have great interviews every week with leaders of social enterprise. I invite you to come take a listen and join in our conversations. Would love to hear from you in person!
