The Diamond In You & How You Can Never Be Threatened

by Nadia on September 24, 2009 posted in Happiness,Life,Love,Psychology,Spirituality,Tiny Buddha

One book that has been on my bookshelf for years is the Course in Miracles. The first time I read it, I had no idea what it meant and that was sixteen years ago. Each time I read the Course in Miracles, I pick up something different or things become more clear.

Here is the introduction to the Course In Miracles:

1. This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.

2. This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:

Nothing real can be threatened.

Nothing unreal exists.

Herein lies the peace of God.

If we focus on the second section, it pretty much tells us that nothing in our lives can be threatened. What a powerful thought!

Think about this if you will, nothing in your life is at risk of being in jeopardy (and I am not talking about the game show). So what does that mean?

TreeLight

When I was studying with my Buddhist Master, he told me one day that I had a tendency to throw pearls at swine. It is a line from the Bible and he said it represented my behavior perfectly.

At first, I recalled the phrase from the Bible (Matthew 7:6) and wondered how it applied to me. He went on to tell me that I had the problem of underestimating myself and overestimating others. He said that I did not recognize my potential and that I was not careful in choosing my company. So whenever I was dealing with people, I was throwing pearls at pigs. I didn’t know whether to be happy at having pearls or to be sad that I was hanging around swine.

It would take me another seven years to fully come to see that what he had told me was true and it relates to the second section that is mentioned above.

Within each one of us is a spark of the Divine. Various religious texts from around the world all state that humans were created in the image of God. God does not create imperfection. You are inherently perfect at your core (and I am not referring to your abs).

One Hindu teacher states that the human soul is equivalent to a diamond in the mine. When diamonds are mined, they are covered and so in order to get them to be the sparkling stones that we know, they have to be polished. (The picture below shows one of the steps of how they are washed and cleaned)

WashingDiamonds

He said that human beings are like diamonds. Within all of us is a gem but we have covered it up with fear and all our other issues. He went on to say that experiences in life are similar to the polishing that takes place with diamonds.

So with all of this in mind, you have the potential to do anything that you want to do in life. Since your core is truly perfect, it cannot be threatened. You think you can be threatened but that is merely fear talking and not love.

For at any given moment, you have what you need. The past is gone and the future is not here yet so all you have is now. And at this exact moment, you are not lacking. Since you are reading this blog post, it is safe to assume the following: you have a computer, Internet connection, a desk/table, a chair, a roof over your head and maybe something to drink at your side. Are you lacking anything as you read this sentence? No, you are not.

So often in life we fear this unknown force that will come and snatch away all our belongings. How many times have you known people who are so afraid of talking about the good things in their life because they believe that somehow they will be jinxed?

Or how about all the talk we have heard about the Devil. Do you honestly think that there is some creature with horns who walks the Earth with the sole mission to get you? As Marianne Williamson has said, the Devil is not some guy walking the desert in Mongolia but rather, he is in the space between your two ears.

Diamonds

Ego, which uses the language of fear likes you to think that life is full of potential for disaster. It makes you cautious of those who are different than you. It is so overly concerned with being safe, that it will justify how it chooses to express itself. It will be greedy, rude, angry, mean, insensitive and so many other characteristics which are activated for the sheer belief that it is under attack.

Ever watch someone talking to themselves out loud? Guess what, that is what we all do when our thoughts are rushing through our head. The only difference is that we do it silently and some do it out loud.

We are always under fear of being attacked whether it is in the form of violence or a negative judgment or an insult or whatever is your issue of choice. Turn on the television at any moment of the day, and you have fear being reflected back at you.

Yes, bad things do happen in the world but that is not an excuse for you to not live up to your full potential. You are not some insignificant soul who was plopped here just to eat, sleep, fall in love, maybe have kids, make money and die.

By going through your days without any thought or regard to what you are contributing to the world is a waste of the precious gift of life. Within each and every one of us lies a soul that is here to spread love and joy in a way that is uniquely our own. And in no way can fear win or triumph over love. For love can never be threatened.

Note: In addition to being a regular contributor over at Elephant Journal, I have been asked to be a part of Tiny Buddha. Here is the link to my first article (“The Blessings of Unrequited Love”) at that site. Enjoy and by the way, this is not the big project I am working on. Please know that I will make an announcement about that when I can. Your patience and support are so much appreciated.

Hi Nadia,
What an inspiring article to read! Have I let fears hold me back? Definitely. And I probably still do to an extent today also. Reading here, though, I’m reminded of my soul, something I’ve thought alot about recently, and how it is a diamond just waiting to be brought to the surface and shined. And wow! What a great thought. To think of myself as a diamond!

Nadia, thank you, once again, for the love you pour out into your writing. I am thinking very much right now about the diamond within me, and what I can do to let it shine brightly!

Hi Lance,

You are welcome and thank you for all the wonderful things you wrote. Yes, you are a diamond. Everyone is a diamond but we just do not see it because we are caught up with the layers. When we keep pulling off the layers and working on ourselves, we come to see the gem that is within us all. We are not here by accident and we are not inconsequential. Every single one of us has a purpose and meaning. If anything, it is our duty to shine as brightly as we can. :)

Beautiful Nadia. Both the diamonds and the article! What I also like about the diamond metaphor is that each one is unique.

I’ve hard of Course of Miracles many times and I keep seeing references to it .. clearly it’s something I would benefit from .. maybe the time is approaching for me to get hold of it (and read it I guess!).

Lisis September 24, 2009 at 1:08 pm

This is beautiful, Nadia. I also had a brush with the Course in Miracles not too long ago. I remember those two lines feeling extremely powerful when I first read them:

Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.

The core of who we are has always been there… and will always remain, whether we choose to see it or not.
.-= Lisis´s last blog ..When Life Knocks You Down =-.

Nadia September 24, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Hi Lisis,

The Course in Miracles is really a profound book. Each section is better than the section before and it truly changes how you look at the world and yourself.

And yes, the core of us will be always be there whether we choose to accept it or not. I think eventually, people come to see that truth at some point. We are truly much more powerful and important than we realize.

I’m thrilled you have a new spot over at Tiny Buddha – well done! I’ll check it out after I submit this.

Diamonds make me think of clarity. They only sparkle when they reflect light, but that divine light’s there, all around us, inside us, all the time. It’s love that makes us shine, and the more ways we have to reflect light back to others, the more clarity we have, the more we sparkle.

This post made me think of Victor Frankl again, how he was stripped of everything and yet kept that divine light in him strong, bright and clear when there was little left except his essence.

Hi Janice,

I just love Viktor Frankl. Recently, I watched the documentary “The Shadow Effect” which included a story of a woman who survived the Holocaust. It was so beautiful that by the end of the movie, I was in tears. People like Viktor and the woman in that movie are such powerful examples of overcoming extreme pain and suffering. They show that despite the crap that life may throw at you, you can rise above it and shine so bright.

May we all learn that lesson without having to experience extreme pain and suffering!

Uzma September 24, 2009 at 2:05 pm

Hey Nadia
That was wonderful and just what I needed to hear . Fear does often bog us down but then we get reminders that love exists within us. There is indeed so much to be grateful for.
We just have to wash those layers of fear away :-) Thank you for this reminder. God bless

Nadia September 24, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Hi Uzma,

I am happy that this post spoke to you. Yes, fear definitely weighs us down for no reason. And life is full of blessings if we just simply look. Blessings to you too! :)

Joy September 24, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Nadia,
Thank you so very much! I have been throwing pearls at swine. It was a hard lesson, but once I became Aware well–first I felt foolish to have allowed myself to be in such a situation, but second–I was astonished to find an abundance of pearls, and a world full of people with treasures and positive energy and humor and love…no swines:) I am in a point now where I am delighted by surprises–instead of fearful of them–and my energy is celebrated instead of squashed. I am discovering that the truths we know to be true..you get back what you give out, abundance is yours if you ask and allow, what comes around goes around, God is Love, close one door one door opens, make room and good will flow…are actually true! Fear can be such a heavy dark shadow, but the light of faith and the universe far outshines anything externally cast.

Nadia September 24, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Hi Joy,

Thank you so much for sharing how you used to be a pearl thrower too. I am so happy that you realized what was happening and did what was right for you! Yay! :) That is awesome!

Life is so amazing and so simple but we have complicated it and fear often gets in our way from seeing the beauty and truth. Often surprises are blessings in disguise…we just need to change our outlook.

May you keep shining bright and thank you for showing that we pearl throwers can recover! :)

Lori September 24, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Hi Nadia,

As I was reading your brilliant post (no pun intended), I was struck by the Williamson quote, “Devil is not some guy walking the desert in Mongolia but rather, he is in the space between your two ears.” That really says a lot!

I am ~1/3 way through a book that discusses how the idea of “god” evolved in human culture, and, even though I had heard or read a lot of these ideas before, reading them as a timeline across the ages is a unique experience. It also reminds me a lot of what you are saying here, we are all gods and goddesses.

In fact, primitive religions (primitive in the sense of them being the first – or in early human history, not “small minded”) regarded gods and goddesses as ‘regular’ people, with extra specialities or talents in one thing or another. Just regular Joes and Janes walking amongst everyone with special powers. I love that.

Can I start calling you Isis?
:)

That Marianne Williamson quote is so awesome. I heard it years ago and it stuck in my mind.

The book you are referring to is “The Evolution of God”, right? It is awesome to see how the concept of God evolved and that book is on my list. Thank you so much for sharing what you have learned. It only makes me want to read that book sooner as opposed to later.

Brenda September 24, 2009 at 3:05 pm

I remember getting a copy of The Course in Miracles and devouring in a couple of days when (correct me if I’m wrong) it’s meant to be read as a daily devotional. Wish I knew what happened to my copy. I’d be reading it again after reading this. Thanks, Nadia.

Hi Brenda,

Yes, you are supposed to read a section a day along with doing an exercise from the workbook. The entire volume is comprised of the actual text, a workbook and a teacher’s manual. It is about one thousand pages (all three put together) and it is a fabulous book.

It should be easy to find and let me know what you think of it this time. :)

Peggy September 24, 2009 at 3:35 pm

I’m a HUGE fan of Marianne Williamson and I’ve read her book “The Gift of Change” so many times – I probably read it every six months or so, cover to cover. It might be time again! I could be wrong, but I do beleive her Course in Miracles is available via oprah.com. I know it was earlier this year. But as a bookie (not the gambling kind) I’ll be making my way over to my favorite bookstore to buy my own copy :-)

And for the record, for the first nineteen years of my adult life, I threw pearls at swine. I don’t do that anymore.

Namaste!

Nadia September 24, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Hi Tim,

You are so kind, thank you so much for all that you said. I am so touched. :)

When I used to really underestimate myself, I was fascinated with people who were the total opposite. I would see people who were so arrogant and was floored at how they could be so full of themselves without having the substance. I remember there was this one guy who was a great student but an idiot when it came to life. Watching him brag was like watching a sci-fi movie. I just could not relate to it. Now that I am wiser (or so I hope), whenever I run into someone who is arrogant, my immediate reaction is to want to hug them because there is a lot of insecurity there.

I guess what I am trying to say is that we each have issues with who we are.

CraigKausen September 24, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Hi Nadia,
As I write this, I’m not exactly sure where it will go. There is a lot both in the intro from Course in Miracles as well as in your reflection upon it. I’m not sure if you are looking for points of view or just feedback, but what the heck.

My take on the introduction is that he is saying that what we all see around us is the unreal and that beyond the physical is where our reality exists. When we touch the real, the outflow of that glance is love. The real is truly infinite and if you really allow yourself to imagine infinity, then any restriction, depiction, or description being always finite is nothing in comparison to infinite and can ever be a partial of the whole.

Additionally, the real beyond the physical is eternal and timeless, thus there is nothing that can ever harm it. To tie in with your statement about Pearls to Swine, it exactly relates to what he states as far as taking what you choose to take. Each person is ready to hear different messages at different times and some will never hear anything but the unreal (the fear, the worry, the anger…the noise).

When you see past the unreal through a quiet mind, you start to feel the touch of the real.

I have not read A Course in Miracles, but I will now that you’ve brought it up.

Thank you for your posts and your sharing from the real…

Nadia September 24, 2009 at 7:13 pm

Hi Craig,

You are so welcome and thank you for writing from the real too. :)

The interpretation you gave is perfect. What is real is love and it is infinite, timeless and perfect. Fear is an illusion which then creates the concepts of limitation, imperfection and so on.

And what is so beautiful, is that we are all infinite and perfect and limitless….we just don’t see it….yet. :)

Jannie Funster September 24, 2009 at 5:15 pm

I need to kick my fears in the butt. And will starting Tuesday when I’m back from Bulgaria.

We recently watched something on t.v. about how diamonds are formed by such volatile inner energy in the earth, then spewed up volcanic-like, kind of like child-birth. I am so ready to shine. In fact this is kind of spooky because I’ve been toying with the idea of “shining like a diamond” in a new lyric. Maybe this post is the proof I need to go with my gut and follow up on that train of song idea. THANK YOU!!!

I believe you are 100% spot-on about the devil, he exists only in minds, never the heart.

Hi Jannie,

That is so cool how you were toying with the idea of mentioning a diamond in your lyrics…and here is a post on diamonds. Maybe the Universe is trying to you something? ;)

The Devil is a mind-dweller….no wonder he is dark…there is no light up there in the attic! :)

And by the way, have a safe trip home from Bulgaria. I hear it is beautiful there! Have fun!

Kaushik September 24, 2009 at 5:21 pm

The ACIM is wonderful. It has a really good treatise on the ego, and great reminders that the only thing that imprisons us is the illusion of fear. I frequently quote from the ACIM. It is by the way freely available on a number of websites.

It’s funny–the deeper I go into awakening, the simpler it seems. It is just the illusion of fear that we have to release. Life keeps giving me opportunities to release fear–sometimes I’ve misinterpreted the opportunities as difficulties.

Awesome article. Thanks!

Hi Kaushik,

You are welcome and thank you for the kind words! :)

Fear is truly the root of all problems and it is truly just an illusion. Life is based on love and humans think it is based on fear. The challenge (or the opportunity for mastery as I call it) is that the illusion looks so real and scary but if you dig deep, it is just not real. Life is in constant movement and it is all about love.

Nadia September 25, 2009 at 11:35 am

Hi Bob,

Thank you so much for the two links. I come from a mixed religioun and ethnic background. When I was kid, my dad told me that all religions and people were one and that I was free to pick whichever religion I wanted to follow. The funny thing is that when he told me all of this, I could not understand what was the big deal. Of course, all people are equal and of course, all religions are one. Only when I went to school did I realize that not everyone is raised with such open-mindedness.

As a result, I eventually went on to study the majority of religions. Buddhism and Vedanta is what really resonated with my soul. Actually, I was initiated into a Vedanta Order where my studies were primarily focused on Buddhism and ancient Vedic texts. We also studied all the religions in detail. I almost became a nun but decided that I wanted to experience marriage and so I left but I still do study Eastern texts.

So I can relate to your journey to some degree. :) Please know that there is more to my story but I had to give a concise version here.

Wilma Ham September 24, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Hi Nadia.
I love that Marianne Williamson is so real. She is so straight when she talks about our own part we play in causing a change and eventually miracles.
I am with Kaushik too when he says life is really more simple than we think; it is the mind that loves problems so it can feel good about solving them.
It sounds a bit arrogant at first when you hear pearls before the swines and yet it does pay to observe who you hang out with.
We are all snow white, yet life can throw mud at us.
That is how life is at the moment, like driving on country roads, fun but you have to clean the car afterwards.
Nothing real can be threatened, nothing can hurt love.
That is very encouraging, and I will wait patiently to hear about your project, Love Wilma.

Thank you so much for the positive feedback and no worries, you are not alone in underestimating yourself and overestimating others. I think these traits are more common than we realize. It is wonderful that you recognize what is happening within you. That is a very important step. So yay! :)

authentic mama September 25, 2009 at 10:47 am

Wonderful! I think one of the key things for me is – being able to have compassion for others who are still ‘in the ruff’ (of course I am a perfect diamond yet either) but – not compromise my own values – thinking this is somehow good for them or being a friend means agreeing (Or rolling around in the mud right along with the swine).
OR- I used to think that I could somehow help others who were really broken, not realizing they needed to do it themselves in their own time (I can’t fix it or do it for them). Also, taking personally what they were saying about me or how they are acting toward me (which was just a reflection of what they felt about themselves) or somehow needing some approval or recognition for throwing my own little pearls.
What I finally came to realize is the best gift I could offer is being a good example. And to do that I need to focus on myself.

Hi Authentic Mama,

I can relate to every single thing you wrote in your comment. Your experiences are like mine. It is interesting how some of us feel so compelled to make others feel better that we lose sight of ourselves and yet think that by doing that, we are somehow helping.

It took me a long time to realize that it was okay for me to stand my ground even if others thought I had lost my mind. It was really hard at first but it is getting easier with time.

Megan "JoyGirl!" Bord September 25, 2009 at 1:18 pm

I love the timing of me reading this (always do!). Today, I’ve felt fear. I’m afraid that my beautiful relationship will be snatched away from me (thanks for that wording), and that the security I seek will never be mine. The whole time I was on the treadmill this morning, that thought and various scenarios kept playing over and over in my mind: how angry I’d be, how let down I’d feel, the “oh no, not again” sensations. And I realized I was playing the old tape in my mind, and that whatever is meant to be, will be. No amount of worrying can change what is destined to take shape in my life. All worrying does is make me feel bad. So I recognized that bad feeling, and reached for better feeling thoughts: the opposite scenario of what I’d been imagining. The idea that maybe, just maybe, the relationship I have now is the one I’ve been waiting for my whole life and will remain. (And yes, I also know that nothing is forever…)

Thank you, Nadia, for these inspirational and uplifting words today. I so needed to read them. (smile)

Hi Megan,

Don’t you just love it when you come across something which fits perfectly with what you are going through? :) I am happy that this post spoke to you. Please know that you are not alone in doing this, we all struggle with that fearful voice that lingers in our heads. So often we think that our present and future will be like our past when in reality it does not. Good for you for recoginizing what was happening. That is such a gift to be so aware!

And please know that you are so full of love and joy, I have no doubt that it will be mirrored back to you in some way or form. :)

Sunny Jamiel September 26, 2009 at 6:01 am

Nadia,

That was a beautiful article, just as I expect from you. :)

I think books like “A Course in Miracles” unfold their meaning to the reader with time and as one progresses on one’s soul journey the meaning also become deeper, clearer and more significant.

Nadia September 26, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Hi Sunny,

Thank you so much. :)

And I totally agree. As we progress, we come to understand things more clearly and easily. We are always growing…it is up to us to determine what we want to learn and how much we want to learn. I guess it is all interconnected.

Hope all is well! :)

Lisa (mommymystic) September 26, 2009 at 10:59 am

Lovely, especially those diamonds! Your teacher’s story reminded me of a story Gangaji likes to tell about the spiritual process called ‘the diamond thief’, in which a diamond merchant and a pickpocket are in a train car together, and the pickpocket spends the entire time trying to find the diamond on the merchant in order to steal it. At the end of the ride, he finally confronts the merchant, saying, ‘ok, I looked everywhere, where did you hide it?’ And the merchant reaches into the pickpocket’s own pocket, pulls out the diamond, and says, ‘The only place you never looked!’ We look everywhere for happiness except where it is!

Hi Lisa,

Thank you so much for sharing the story from Gangaji. I love it! :) Goes to show you….the answers are always within us but we just do not see it. Isn’t it amazing how such stories tell us so much about life and ourselves? One thing that always fascinated me with Eastern thought, there are always such great stories that tell so much about human behavior.

Hope all is well with you and yours! :)

Lisa,
Now this is a great, great metaphor! Brilliant. That made me smile in a big way! Thank you,

I’ve only been here a couple of times, but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed this article. I love the concept of the human soul being like a diamond because it is a perfect analogy. Both diamonds and souls:
Are of great worth
Are made of extremely strong material
Have layers that have to been taken away to let the true gem inside shine out

Growing up, I was always taught in church that everyone, no matter their age, ethnicity, religion, gender, whatever, has a divine nature inside of them. Much of this article, and it sounds like the book (I have never read it) parallels that belief and I think that is just plain awesome.

Thanks for the great article, I plan on sharing it with my friends in the near future!

Hi Laura,

Thank you so much for all the kind words and for sharing it with your friends. I really appreciate it. :)

If you do not mind me asking, which denomination do you belong to? It is great that you were taught in church that we all have a spark of the divine within us. Most churches, in my experience, really do not focus on that so I think it is wonderful that you were taught such a profound concept. Very cool and like you said, it is plain awesome! Yay! :)

You have a way with words. I like the titles and I like this point – “Nothing real can be threatened.”

Hi JD,

Thank you so much. :)

Hi Nadia .. as I can see JD’s comment above – I agree you do have a way with words. The words that stood out for me and the paragraph with it .. are: “For at any given moment, you have what you need. The past is gone and the future is not here yet so all you have is now. …”

I love your bright sparkly diamonds .. not what the post is about – but I’m about to do one on pearls and diamonds .. but your throwing pearls to swine ties in too – interesting comment from the Buddhist Master – we do expend energy unnecessarily on some people – they won’t be moved or changed, or look at themselves.

Thanks Nadia .. great post -

Hi Hilary,

You are so welcome and thank you for always being so kind and supportive. I am very grateful.

Yes, sometimes we do waste a lot of energy on people in the hopes that they will change or are like us but people are who they are and we just have to accept them as they are.

Easier said than done but at least it can be done. :)
