The Buddhists have a saying that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. The literal translation of that saying is very true. As with any saying or proverb or parable, additional interpretations also can apply.
Taking that into consideration, the above mentioned saying also applies to the people who cross your path. For one of the many great things about life is that the people who are a part of your life are there for a reason. Even the person who is your cashier at the store is meant to be.
I have been fortunate to come across some really amazing souls who are doing what they can to heal the world. Today, I want to introduce you to a spiritual counselor and teacher who is truly a being of love and light. Her name is Dorothea Delgado.
Dorothea has been in my life for the last three years and her knowledge about spirit is truly amazing. I have learned a lot from her and will share some of it with all of you but first let me tell you more about her life.
Dorothea currently resides in Key West, Florida but she is originally from Germany. When she was a young girl, she used to love to go out into the woods and wonder around. She would love the smells of nature and would lie down on the ground. She told me that she was able to see herself being so small that she could fit under a mushroom.
When she felt that small, she was able to see fairies, devas, and elementals. She could sense the energy of the world around her. After going home and telling her mother, she would congratulate Dorothea on having a wonderful imagination.
Then sometime later when she was visiting one of her friends, she went to the shed that was in the backyard and had a conversation with her friend’s grandfather. When Dorothea came home and told her mother, she was told that it was not possible since the grandfather had passed away that morning. That is when Dorothea realized that what was obvious to her, was not obvious to others.

When her grandmother passed away, she was able to sense what was happening with her and realized that she was not dead. She realized that although her grandmother was no longer in her body, her spirit was still alive.
At the age of sixteen, Dorothea read Siddhartha by Herman Hesse and that became her Bible. She knew that she was in the world for a purpose and she felt that her purpose was to help heal people. So she decided to become a registered nurse.
Dorothea was fascinated with the mind and the spirit and the dynamic of that relationship. Therefore, she decided to pursue her education as a nurse in a psychiatric institution. Do to the fact that she was able to see what others did not, she could sense the pain of her patients and became frustrated at the medical system because she felt she really could not be of help in the way that she wanted.
So Dorothea decided to travel and headed to the Caribbean, Central and South America. She made shoes and jewelry to make a living. She also began to counsel people for free.
Eventually, she decided to give nursing another shot and headed back to Germany. This time she worked in the Intensive Care Unit for a year and by the end of the year, she felt that it would be best for her to leave nursing since she was frustrated with the system. Dorothea realized that healing people was her purpose in life but she was not meant to be a nurse.
So she headed back to the Caribbean and eventually ended up in Key West where she has been for the last twenty-three years. She did work as a maid, dishwasher and other small jobs while she did her counseling on the side. She now works as a spiritual counselor full time and has her own online store where she sells products that she has made.
Dorothea’s spiritual training began in earnest in her twenties and was mainly conducted on her own. She did have one physical teacher, Gary Four Stars, who trained her in Native American traditions. However, all the rest of her knowledge has come through her own training.

Being that I have studied with monks and such, all the information Dorothea has shared with me is exactly what I have learned. Her knowledge is profound and talking to her always brings me such comfort and understanding. Each discussion sheds new light on concepts that I thought I knew. Here is a sample of our last conversation:
One concept that really weighs people down is the notion of fear. Have you ever struggled with fear?
Dorothea: I don’t think there is any human being in this dimension that is free from fear. Everybody has it to different degrees. I have cycles of strength and vulnerability. When I am vulnerable, I experience a stronger amount of fear in my system and life. But I never have felt overwhelmed or overtaken by it.
When I was sixteen, I was already doing meditations and striving to be free from fear. One of the ways to free myself from fear was the realization of the importance of trust. Trust in the Divine Order and the awareness that I would be guided by it. And trust it more than my mind and body. That is the case for everyone. We all need to trust the Divine Order.
Do you have any advice for how people can overcome fear and get the life that they want? I guess what I am saying is what is the best way to be in the world so that we all can have a life that we love?
Dorothea: The idea of how to balance life is really a matter of addressing all of the components that are part of who we are.
First and foremost, has to come the acceptance that we know and believe that we are first and foremost spirit. And that higher self guides us even if we are not consciously aware of it.
The idea of beginning to balance life requires us to then address the different components that we consist of which are:
Physical body
Mental body
Emotional body
Spirit Self
Soul Body
All these components comprise one big Mandala. It is all interconnected. So all these factors have to be in alignment in order to have a balanced life.
Someone may want to discover their life purpose but if there is some type of blockage in one of these areas, they can do their best but they will not be able to find the answers that they want.
What about when we pass away. For example, my mother passed away due to cancer. Was that predetermined? Was she meant to go on that date?
Dorothea: Everything holds a vibration or frequency. We have free will to choose how we handle the situations and obstacles that life present to us. Overcoming the obstacles determines if we go north or south. We have the choice as to how we handle the circumstances that confront us in our lives.
So let us say a woman was able to give love to others but not herself then that cancer may bring her closer to her karmic completion. Then it is appropriate for her to have cancer because it insures that the soul can complete its lesson. The body responds to karma. It goes back to those five components that we discussed.
“Death” has guidelines and there are no set rules. As for timing, we have free will but we cannot change the timing of events. At least that is the case 99% of the time.
How about the Law of Attraction?
Dorothea: The movie “The Secret” made it seem that if you have a thought, you can materialize what you thought about. Only a few souls are able to materialize merely by thinking of something.
The real Law of Attraction goes back to those five components. When those five aspects of yourself are in alignment then you can create your reality.
Everything in life goes back to those five components.
What is the distinction between the soul body and the spirit self?
Dorothea: Soul is a part of the spirit self. So when spirit decides to go for another round and incarnate, soul rides down a ray of light and is imprinted with all the information that you need for that given embodiment. That information is imprinted at the moment of conception. That is when the soul enters the body.
Overall spirit self does have a level of substance even if it does not live in us. It is a part of us and that is who we truly are.

We live in a world where people put more faith in money than in spirit. We think truth can be found in what we can see and touch. We forget that some of the things we strive for in life are not things we can touch and see.
The best example is love. How can you touch and see love? Love is not a concrete item but it is a feeling. Just because you cannot see something, does not mean it does not exist.
This is true of spirituality. Many people really do not pay that much attention to it because it is viewed as being not realistic or intelligent. Or rather it is something that cannot be believed because we just cannot see it. To be candid, whenever I write a post that is deeply rooted in spirituality, I am somewhat concerned as to how it will be perceived.
Not that I doubt what I write but rather I am aware that many people value their minds more than their hearts. The irony is that the heart is far more wise than the mind but I guess we all have to do what we feel is best and eventually we all come to discover the same truths. The heart will always win out in the end.
We are all capable of so much but we let fear get in the way. However, we can learn to control our fear and it is thanks to people like Dorothea who help us understand life and ourselves a bit better. I don’t know about you but I am going to do my best to get my five components in alignment. I hope you will do the same!

Special thanks to Dorothea for taking the time to answer all my questions. I am blessed that you are a part of my life. Thank you!

Very interesting interview. I’ve had Siddhartha on my Amazon shopping list for a while. It’s about time I picked it up.

Hi David,
Talking with Dorothea is always interesting and please do read Siddhartha. It is an awesome book. By the way, the best translation that I have seen is the one that is published by Barnes and Noble. The cost is pretty cheap too.
Beautiful, Nadia… as always. I love the lessons, the new encouragement to read Siddartha (I’ve been meaning to), and the story of her life. She knew she wanted to be a healer, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a nurse or some other “traditional” path. She found/ created her own way, even taking other jobs along the way just to stay true to her internal calling.
I’ve been reading Wayne Dyer’s “The Power of Intention” and Carl Jung’s “Synchronicity”, so I am currently a HUGE believer that the right people and circumstances cross our paths at precisely the right moments. Thank you for this confirmation of what has been brewing inside.

Hi Lisis,
I am happy that the post brought you some comfort. Everything is life is a matter of timing. There is a Divine Order to everything and yet there is free will. I have to admit I am somewhat surprised that you did not believe in doing things via a non traditional way. The beauty about life is that there is no set path to achieve what we want to achieve. Being a healer can mean so many different things. Once we know what our calling is then life will show us the way to go and of course, we have to listen to our inner voice too.
As for books, there are many great books out there which emphasize that point. “The Power of Intention” is an awesome book. You should also read “Inspiration” which is also by Wayne Dyer. Then there are the books by James Redfield as well as “A Return to Love”. So there is a lot of wonderful material out there to help provide insight.
Thanks for introducing me to another great spiritual teacher. I can’t wait to go to her site and read more of her writng, she sounds like an amazing soul to know.

Hi Jay,
Dorothea is an amazing soul. I am so fortunate to have met her. She does have some writings via newsletter which you can subscribe to on her site. She also does offer sessions which are a bit high in price but worth every cent.
Hi Nadia!
This was awesome – so is Dorothea! Will definitely go to her site! Nadia, I loved the question “How can you touch and see love?” That just jumped off the page at me. Love is so powerful that it totally defies description, though poets have tried, songwriters have tried, everyone has given it a shot, haven’t they? But by golly, you can sure feel it and give it! And Nadia, you write with it – always!

Hi SuZen,
I am happy that you enjoyed the interview. Dorothea is awesome and her knowledge is really quite profound. Thank you so much for saying that I write with love. That was so kind of you and very loving too. So you radiate love too.
That’s so interesting, and I’m really glad you shared Dorothea’s interview with us. What a gift she has — the ability to see beyond what our five senses perceive, and go deeper, into other dimensions, actually. Wow!
I’m with you, Nadia, in that I’d like to get my five areas more in balance. It’s almost like learning to ride a bike for me: just when I’m doing it, I think, “Holy cow, I’m doing it!” and then I lose my balance again. Such is the great learning process in life, though!
Happy Friday!

Hi Megan,
Happy Friday to you too! I am so happy that you enjoyed the interview and I liked how you described the process of aligning the five components like learning to ride a bike again. That is a great analogy because inherently we are perfect but we lost sight of that perfection and spiritual awareness helps us get back to our natural state of being.
Hi Nadia!
Great post. Thank you for sharing Dorothea’s wisdom with us. I am glad you addressed the component of fear. I loved Dorothea’s response that she has “cycles of strength and vulnerability”–that is beautiful and thinking about ourselves that way, when perhaps we are in a crisis or a state of change in our lives, really feels comforting. She has great advice about not letting fear take over…So we can be aware that we are affected by fear in the moment but remain an observer, thinking and feeling our way through it rather than succumbing to it. Thanks Nadia, this was a great post (they always are!!)!

Hi Jodi,
Thank you so much for the positive feedback and for always being so supportive.
When I talked to Dorothea, the notion of fear was on my mind a lot because I have become more and more aware of how so many of us are living our lives according to that fear. So her answer was of great comfort to me because it reminded me that there is a Divine Order and even though we may become vulnerable at times, we know in the back of our mind that things are as they should be.
Hi Nadia
Thank you so much for interviewing and introducing Dorthea to those of us who have not been fortunate enough to know about her and her wonderful work.
I can tall already she is a spirit that I resonate with very much. I love all that she said about the LOA, death and fear. It is so awesome to be acquainted in whatever way it may be with more people who are spreading such love and wisdom around.
So thank you Nadia for this interview and thank you Dorthea for taking part and sharing your wisdom with us all.

Hi Evita,
You are most welcome and thank you so much for the positive feedback.
As I mentioned in the post, I am somewhat cautious when I publish a post that is deeply rooted in spirituality. For me, I love such things but I am aware that not many people may feel the same way. I try to be respective of that yet at the same time I have to be true to who I am and what I believe. It is great to see that you resonated with Dorothea. That is awesome.
Hi Nadia,
I read Dorthea’s story with great interest! She has chosen to follow her heart; she is a great example for all of us. Thank you for introducing me to yet another beautiful soul.
In regards to one of your final comments, “I am somewhat concerned as to how it will be perceived,” I believe you should continue writing from your heart and not to concern yourself with perception. Because of your openness and honesty, I’ve grown to love coming to your blog posts and letting your words wash over me. Don’t go changing, girl!
Thanks, again, for writing your truth.

Hi Lori,
You are so kind. No worries, I will not go changing. I cannot imagine not being honest or open. It is not my style.
Hi Nadia,
Thank you for Dorothea’s interview–so much of it touched me. I will definitely check out her website. My first overwhelmingly loud thought was “I am ready for a teacher”. Then I realized I am in a community of teachers right within these blogs. I am being “taught” right now, right where I am, in a way I fully understand and relate to-wow.
Dorothea’s spirit shines right through her words. I needed to be reminded of the five components, and that the body responds to karma; direct correlation to the stage I am currently in and have been trying to figure out.
Thank you for introducing Dorothea!
Hi Joy,
I am so happy that the interview with Dorothea had such an effect. And you made such a great point about being surrounded by teachers. That is one of the many amazing things about blogging…you get introduced to so many wonderful souls and different types of wisdom.
As for the body responding to karma, if you are interested in knowing more about this subject, you may want to check out “The Anatomy of the Spirit” by Caroline Myss. It is a book that really describes how our emotions and thoughts effects our bodies. Whenever I have something come up in my body, I refer to this book and 99% of the time is right on target.
Hi Nadia.
I can relate to your fear of opening yourself up while writing about spirituality. I have that about God as God for me was for so long in the bad religious books.
And there have been times when speaking up about spirituality in this way certainly had consequences.
Now more than ever we need people with courage and in that way we get to see that the message is, although told in many different ways, becoming more and more consistent.
It is also wonderful by declaring your inner knowing, we can find each other and get to nurture each other.
Because this kind of thinking needs nurturing, we all need to nurture these seeds of heart centered knowing and the more nurturers the better. Because there is still a lot going on that can kill these seeds off.
I loved meeting Dorothea and much love to you for introducing yet another beautiful soul who dares to speak up.
Hugs to you both, Wilma
.-= Wilma Ham´s last blog ..What happens when instead of an old fashioned partner I become a sponsor. =-.
Hi Wilma,
You are so sweet and kind. Thank you so much for all that you wrote. It meant so much. You are right, such subjects are needed because they are not so common and you are right that we all need to nurture one another more and more.
It is funny to me that some would react negatively to such subjects. There was a time in my life where I was very unaware of spirituality and looking back at those times, life looked so bleak and dark and held no meaning. I am thankful that I was able to find meaning and so for me topics concerning spirit are not threatening.
However, there are those who do not feel that way and I can understand the fear. Because with spirituality we are held accountable for how we behave and not many people want that level of responsibility. The irony is that whether we believe in spirit or not, it does not change the reality that all actions have causes and effects.
Hi Nadia:
Thank you for another enlightening post and for sharing Dorothea’s story! It is coming at the perfect time for a lot of people. It was interesting to learn about the five components and ways to overcome fear. I spent time with a group of people “in transition” last week and fear really resonated with all of us. I’m sure uncertainty had something to do with it.
In any case, I am going to check out Dorothea’s website and look into the Hesse book. Once again, thanks for an awesome post!
.-= Tim´s last blog ..Weekend Video Diversion: Improv Everywhere =-.
Hi Tim,
You hit the nail on the head about why we all deal with fear. It is all due to uncertainty. We always are so afraid that things will not turn out “right” and so we dwell on that insecurity. We all deal with it and I think so many people are in transition now. Actually, the whole world is in transition now if you think about it.
“Siddharta” is a great book and the best translation (in my opinion) is the one that Barnes and Noble publishes. It is only $5.95 too. If you do read it, let me know what you think.
As Lori agrees on this, “whenever I write a post that is deeply rooted in spirituality, I am somewhat concerned as to how it will be perceived.” I sure am glad you Do, Nadia. Your authenticity shines forth from posting about spiritual. Please don’t stop (as if you could, right?) We really are first and foremost spiritual beings.
I will now start referring to my mini trepidations as “vulnerabilities”, not fears. I like that gentle approach!
And YES on the first line, I’d heard it bandied about before but never really grasped its full meaning . Hey — I guess this Jannie-student really is ready to learn!
Hi Jannie,
Thank you so much for being so kind and so supportive. It means so much. And yes, we definitely are first and foremost spiritual beings. I wonder why people cannot see that. Then again, I did not see that for so many years either. So no worries, we are all works in progress.
And yay for turning fears into vulnerabilities! Yay!
Hi Nadia .. thanks for this it resonates now rather too much – Dorothea sounds an amazing lady .. and it’s been interesting reading your interview and the points you made for us. I look forward to finding out more – in due course.
Thanks so much for sharing her with us -
