Deja Vu All Over Again: Personal Journey 2.0, My Poetry Book & A Very Important Question For You

by Nadia on January 7, 2010 posted in Books,Happiness,Happy Lotus Diaries,India,Life,Misc,Moving,Poetry Book,Psychology,Spirituality,Transformation Journey

When I was twenty-five, I had my mid-life crisis and that began an intense spiritual journey to find happiness and a sense of identity. Took me ten years but I achieved both goals.

Now the irony of all of this is that I never took the time to really figure out the whole work issue. Kind of proves the point that God/The Universe has a sense of humor.

For some reason or another, that was an area that just did not register on my radar. I was so consumed with finding happiness and a sense of self that work/career was a non-issue.

I realize that it was a non-issue because my perception of work was rooted in the concept that I needed to work in order to live. It never really occurred to me that I could work at a job that I loved. To complicate matters even more, I had no idea what I loved to do. I knew I loved writing but to do it as a job just seemed so far-fetched.

In the course of my ten years of intense spiritual studies, I lived in various parts of America and in India. I had traveled extensively and always worked on my writing on the side so everything in terms of environment and work really were totally fine. I guess since my attention was elsewhere, these issues really did not mean anything.

Rose

That all changed in 2009, as mentioned in my previous post, when I started to become aware that there was a lack of harmony when it came to the town we live in and where I was working when I was employed.

As a result of all these events, I have decided to undergo another intense journey as I did when I was twenty-five. This time the focus will be to create the ideal environment in terms of community and work. All the internal aspects of my life are just fine, the time has come to harmonize the outer aspects.

One fact of life is that anything that is not built on a solid foundation will inevitably fall and you will be forced to deal with it at some point. That is exactly what is happening with me in terms of work and environment.

This also proves my point that no matter how much you know or how happy you are, there is always room for improvement. We are all works in progress.

The key is to be conscious of what is happening within you. We all know the things that we could be better at but refuse to deal with them until we have to do so.

This leads me to the following question which I hope you will take the time to answer:

Sunflowers

I wanted to know if you would be interested in reading about my journey of transformation or would you prefer that I write about general spiritual issues like I have been doing in the past or a combination of the two?

Just so you know, when I went through my intense spiritual journey, I documented it in the form of poetry. Those poems were discovered by someone and published into a small book in April of 2006.

If you are interested in reading that book, don’t be because my writing back then was not that good. However, if you want to read it anyway, let me know and I will send you the link or put it in the reply to your comment. It is available as a softbound book and as an e-book.

I share this with you not in an effort to sell the book (my writing in it is not that good so I cringe at the thought of others reading it) but to convey the fact that these journeys are something that I take very seriously. I wish there were blogs back then because I could have shared what happened more clearly than I did via my poems.

I am willing to share my journey openly with all of you but I also do not want to force this on anyone. So your input is greatly appreciated.

Love and hugs to you all! And keep smiling!

I would be so interested in reading about your journey, Nadia. What you are going through resonates with me greatly and I know I could learn a lot.
There is always room for progress and improvement – so true, as long as we live we’ll grow or we’ll be forced to grow. I think the unhappiness of lots of people comes from not understanding this.
I wish you luck on your journey and may you find what you are looking for!

Hi Lana,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate it. One of the many things that is wonderful about life is that we can learn so much from each other. So I am happy to share my journey along with writing about spirituality. I have come to realize that the two are interconnected which is so cool.

I also appreciate your support. I know that you are going through many changes too. We both have an interesting road ahead and I am sure we will turn out awesome! :)

Henri @ Wake Up Cloud January 7, 2010 at 4:46 am

I definitely would like to hear your journey. I love reading personal stories, because there are always different parts that I can relate to. I’m going through the same process of moving, which I will be doing in a few days. Exciting stuff :)

Keep writing and sharing, Nadia!

Nadia January 7, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Hi Henri,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and for the support! Both are greatly appreciated. Kind of cool how you are moving too. Seems like many people are in the process of changing directions. Something is up in the Universe! :)

eva January 7, 2010 at 4:50 am

I want both of them! :)

Nadia January 7, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Hi Eva,

No worries…I will do both! :)

Hilary January 7, 2010 at 5:04 am

Hi Nadia .. I would like both! I don’t want to miss out on your articles on spiritual life .. but I’d love to hear your transformational journey. You’ve offered me so much support at this time and I really have valued the ideas, books, etc that you’ve suggested. My own progress is in moving slowly forward and then I’ll be transforming too – so the more I learn before I am able to be my own person again, the better.

As Henri says .. keep writing and sharing with us – we’ll be here.
Enjoy the process, it sounds as though you are ..

Hi Hilary,

Thank you so much for all that you said. I think I will do both, so no worries.

And I am definitely enjoying where I am. I feel like a huge load has been lifted off my chest. We live in a town where the job market is really bad. So it has been very hard to find work especially work that I would enjoy. The idea of starting fresh feels so right but we have not decided where. So that is another interesting journey.

The Universe/God works in interesting ways….you just never know how things will develop. That is why it is so important to be fully in the moment. For when we are fully in the moment, we are always guided perfectly to the next one.

Hope all is well with you and your mother! :)

Amit Sodha - The Power Of Choice January 7, 2010 at 7:12 am

Hey Nadia,

Yes I came back for more punishment today! :-P

It’s not odd you talked about in that at first your spiritual journey did not tie in with your concepts of livelyhood. It’s a common thing and why so many ‘spiritual’ people live on the bread line because they do not understand or know how to create wealth through what we love. How many of us really do? It’s still a journey for me, one I’m discovering in my own masculine way in the form of comedy, radio and the like.

Keep up the great work with your writing! :-)

Nadia January 7, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Hi Amit,

Punishment????? Dude…what’s with that? :) Just kidding.

You raised a wonderful point about how so many spiritual people struggle with the concept of work and wealth. For some reason, I truly did not really give my all to figuring out the work issue. I held all kinds of jobs and was never lazy but I never really considered doing something that I loved. So it is interesting.

Good for you for discovering your own way! I am sure that you will!

And thank you so much for the support on the writing! :)

twila January 7, 2010 at 8:01 am

Hi Nadia! I’m a lurker and sometimes visitor that would love to hear about your journey. As someone who left fundie christianity, a long-term marriage, came out, decondstructed and imploded and is still a bit shaky….it is so nice (and comforting) to hear about someone else traveling little-known paths and poking through the darkness. It helps me to feel a bit less alone to know that others have struggled with similar questionings and wanderings.

Nadia January 7, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Hi Twila,

Thank you so much for leaving a comment and sharing your thoughts. It is always great when a lurker comes forward. However, there is never any pressure from me. I am grateful to anyone who reads my blog…regardless of whether they leave a comment or not. :)

And thank you for sharing your journey. You definitely have been through a lot. I have some relatives who are very strict Catholics and they all think that I have been brainwashed. So I know how hard it is to leave such an environment and start fresh. I admire your strength and you are not alone. If you ever want to vent or talk, please feel free to email me. It always helps to someone who understands the journey.

One more thing about traveling less known paths, it may look tough at the beginning but the rewards are great. I have learned that from my spiritual journey. Just one step at a time is all that matters. Eventually, you will look back and be surprised to see how far you have walked. :)

Linda Sand January 7, 2010 at 10:02 am

Please, share both. You’ve made me aware of so many things already I look forward to learning more about myself through your eyes and mind.

Nadia January 7, 2010 at 1:25 pm

Hi Linda,

As a result of all the feedback I have been getting, I will share both. Thank you so much for what you shared. I am happy you are learning more about yourself. Oscar Wilde once wrote that the greatest love affair/romance is life is with oneself. :)

Peggy January 7, 2010 at 10:13 am

Nadia – I love personal journey stories, whether their written as poetry or prose. I’m pretty sure you’ve read some of mine – I used to have a page dedicated to my poetry, but I have since removed it and post them occaisionally or tie them into an article.

I hope you do share them…

Hi Peggy,

I have read some of your poetry and it is beautiful. As for my poems, when I read them now, they sound like they were written by someone else. I have changed a lot since then and so it is weird to read. I seriously cringe because I can sense all the pain that I felt back then. Plus, the writing is not that good so that also makes me cringe. However, it shows how much I have grown since then and that is beautiful. So I will see what to do.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! :)

Daphne January 7, 2010 at 10:58 am

I learn a lot by reading about other people’s experiences, which is also why I share my own. If writing about your journey helps you along, then write about it. You won’t be forcing any of us to read it – those who want to will and those who don’t won’t. Good luck as you embark on chapter 2!

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and for the well wishes! :)

Based on all the feedback, I have decided to do a combination of both. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I see how the two are connected. Kind of cool!

Hope all is awesome!

Tim January 7, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Hi Nadia:

Thanks for sharing your story here…I’d be interested in reading a combination of your general spiritual issues along with the story of your transformation. I think there’s a lot to learn from your journey. I know transformation is not an easy thing nor is it an easy process…but necessary to evolve into something bigger and better. Personally speaking, I think I’m seeking harmony on several levels, but mostly finding work that is harmonious with my bigger purpose. Thanks again!

Nadia January 7, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Hi Tim,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. As I have stated in other replies, based on all the feedback, I plan to do a combination of the two. I have come to see how they are both interconnected. So it makes the most sense to just do a combination.

As for transformation, it is an interesting journey and this one feels very different than the spiritual one. Actually, I think the spiritual one was harder because the issues were deeper. Of course, this is what I say now. Maybe down the road my views will be different. So time will tell. :)

Uzma January 7, 2010 at 1:17 pm

Hey Nadia,
Would love to read your journey of transformation. I think u should write it as a book and sell it. An account of the journey and your personal experience followed by life lessons at the end of each chapter, or whatever format you choose. I would pay to read the book.
Would also like to read your poetry.

Love

Nadia January 7, 2010 at 1:39 pm

Hi Uzma,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and for being so supportive. As for writing a book, I would love to and am working on finding a way to do that. It just takes more time than I expected since other people are involved. So it will be interesting to see what happens. However, I can always write it and sell it on here. So we shall see what the road holds.

As for the poetry, it is really not that good and many of the poems are full of pain. Plus, the writing is not as good as it is now. So keep those in mind if you choose to buy the poetry book. Here is the link: http://www.iuniverse.com/Bookstore/BookDetail.aspx?BookId=SKU-000037209

Lisa (mommymystic) January 7, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Hi Nadia, Congratulations on all your big decisions and the ‘outer’ transformation process you are undergoing. As you know, I did something similar along those lines when I gave up my corporate career a few years back, and my husband and I are working towards doing another shift of that type in terms of moving to a locale we feel better about raising our kids in. So both the inner and outer are constantly in motion, as you said.
Personally, I would love to read your poetry, and hear more about your journey. Stories are the most inspiring thing for me. As I was just writing on Lisis’ blog, I am not so much of a personal storyteller myself, so I love I read others’, and the stories you have used here have been very powerful. But I welcome anything you write. Happy changes in 2010! Love, Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Happy New Year to you and yours! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and for the support. It is really appreciated. It is kind of funny how things work.

Being unemployed has been a huge blessing in disguise. So it is neat to see how everything came together. As for the poetry, as I told Uzma, the poems reflect the person that I was then and I am a very different person now. Plus, my writing back then was not as good as it is now. So please keep that in mind should you read the book. Here is the link to the book: http://www.iuniverse.com/Bookstore/BookDetail.aspx?BookId=SKU-000037209

As for the poems, it is funny because when I read them now, I feel like I am reading the words of another human being. The writing is bad but what gets me more is that I never knew how much pain I was in until now. It is weird but cool. Hi Lisis,

It is never late to join the party. So no worries! :)

As for the poetry book, if you do read it, please keep in mind that the person who wrote those poems no longer exists. I have grown so much since then. Another thing is that I do not mention my time spent on the monastic path in that book. The reason being is that I wanted that to be private at the time. However, there are a lot of poems about God. So that aspect is apparent through those poems. And the writing is nothing like it is now which shows the importance of practice!

Wilma Ham January 7, 2010 at 10:34 pm

Hi Nadia
I had to laugh when you say you cringe about your own writing. Isn’t it great though to be able to cringe and see how much you have improved?
Wouldn’t it be worse if you still thought they were great and I bet I will think they are great.
I do think that you will link your personal story and what you are discovering with your spiritual knowledge and I personally find that combination very valuable, inspiring and absolutely heart warming.
I also find it very courageous as it can be hard to write while you are in it and full of the emotions you can judge as NOT that crash hot and you are shamefull about.
So my dear friend, I would love to follow your journey closely and thank you so much for letting me.
It is also lovely as I feel we now can encourage you on the sideline and I endeavor to be loving, mindful, authentic, non judgmental and honest with my observations.

Hi Wilma,

You are right, it is great to be able to cringe and see improvement. When I look at that book, it is like reading the words of a stranger. I cannot believe I was that miserable. So much has changed since those days and it is humbling to see how it has changed. I worked really hard to develop a sense of indentity and inner peace. I just forget the amount of pain that I was in at that time.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and more importantly, for being so supportive. I have decided to do a combination of the two because I think the two go hand in hand.

As for being courageous, I never looked at it that way and will have to ponder that. :)

Barbara Swafford January 8, 2010 at 5:10 am

Hi Nadia,

I read your previous post the other day, and after reading this one and your comments, I’m happy to hear you’ll be sharing both your journey as well as posts on spirituality. As it was mentioned in previous comments, the two do go hand in hand.

As I was reading your post it reminded me of how I searched for many years to find my passion. Although I love my job (we’re self employed and I do all of the administrative duties), I wanted more. It wasn’t until I started blogging I found “it”. And now, after blogging for nearly three years, a new passion (which I’ve tied to blogging) has emerged. That is the basis for my upcoming, soon to be unveiled project.

I know what you mean about living in the moment and letting the new moments unfold. Too often I was so busy thinking and worrying about the future, I forgot to enjoy that which I was doing. As soon as I began to concentrate more on taking care of what was in front of me, creative ideas began to emerge.

You’re a talented gal, Nadia. I’ve no doubt you’ll find a way to incorporate your love of writing with a career that will take you to new heights. Oh what fun I’ll have following your journey and cheering you on. You go, girl!

Congratulations on the emerging of a new passion! Yay! That is wonderful. I look forward to the unveiling of your project.

What you wrote about how you found your passion through blogging really resonates with me. Blogging has opened my eyes in so many ways. It has been a huge gift!

It will be interesting to see how things develop. I have no doubt that all will be well and it should be a fun ride! :)

suzen January 8, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Dearest Nadia – You write it, I read it. I love it. I don’t judge it – and hey, neither should you! Shame on you for saying your first writing was not so good . It was and is a perfect writing of who/where/what you were at the time, don’t you ever apologize – it is all GOOD Nadia! We are all Beginners, every day. To criticize our beginnings is like saying we were not worthy back then. We may improve with age and experience (well some do! haha!) but golly, that’s great, you can see/feel peoples growth. It’s all good!

I learned to love my first painting, instead of cringing, because that was me then, it was all I knew, but it was also very courageous to do it at ALL – to be so determined as to pick up that brush and go for it. That was the beginning of my fearlessness. Not such a bad thing. So the same with writing. Your poetry was courage, honey. You took a step into an unknown. Beautiful!!!!

While I appreciate that you are asking people here what they want to hear – I think it’s kinda obvious that we will all read whatever you choose to write and that you, your heart and where you are at this moment should be what you follow, not the dictates of any crowd here. Everything you write is honest, passionate and inspiring. You do so much for so many people it’s positively amazing. And it is all so light – like butterfly kisses – a fantastic quality to your writing. Your compassion and love shine thru every single post. You are so loved here you could write a Tide commercial and we’d all comment happily!

Much love and many hugs – your fan and friend,
suZen

Nadia January 8, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Hi SuZen,

If you were right in front of me, I would give you a HUGE hug! Thank you so much for all that you wrote. I felt the love with every word and you brought tears to my eyes. So thank you, thank you and thank you!

You are right about how I should not feel bad about my poetry book. You raised (as always) many good points and so I will no longer look at it in the way that have. And I did not know that you painted? Proof again that you are a very talented woman! You should display your work on your blog. I know we would all love to see it.

And by the way, your friendship means more to me than being a fan! :)

Much love and hugs to you! Have a wonderful evening!

I truly enjoy reading everything you write about, Nadia. Whatever you choose to share with us I welcome with open arms.

Personally, I enjoy reading about people’s journeys and the observations during the journey. Which is also why I started a weekend series at my blog about people’s stories. I love them so much that I dedicate most weekends at JBN to people’s stories and journeys. So, with that, I hope to read more about yours here, too!

Vincent Nguyen January 9, 2010 at 2:44 am

Hi Nadia,

Great insightful post about balance between living and earning.

Is it too much to ask for both options? Both your “personal pilgrimage” story and your spiritual posts?
:-)

Age old question:
Are we here to live to work or work to live?
.-= Vincent Nguyen´s last blog ..D.A.R.E. to Achieve Greatness =-.

Nadia January 9, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Hi Vincent,

In my mind it is more being in harmony. So that the work we do is harmonious with who we are.

And no worries, I plan to do both since they both are tied in together in some way. :)

As for your age old question, my answer is neither. As a result of my training as Buddhist nun (even though I did not go through with formal vows), I hold the belief that we are here to learn and to be become better versions of ourselves. Each lifetime is a chance to move forward and come closer to attaining liberation.

lena January 9, 2010 at 11:37 am

I love your writing. I think that the spiritual lessons you write about and your personal experiences are inextricably wound together. It seems when you talk about your journey, there is an automatic spiritual undertone. I am struggling with my current job being at odds with who I am. I would love to make a living using my creativity. I spent a lot of money on a graduate education only to end up hating my job! When I hear about your experiences in dealing with this, it helps me stay positive and inspires me to go in a direction more in tune with who I am. Also, I would be interested in your poetry book (poetry is my first passion!).

As for what you wrote about spending a lot of money on a graduate education, don’t feel bad, I did the same thing too. It is interesting that we are both in the same situation and I am happy to be of help by providing inspiration. Your support also helps me to keep on going. So it is a two way street!

That is cool that poetry is your first passion. It is a great art form and in my mind, a great song is like a great poem. Here is the link for the book: http://www.iuniverse.com/Bookstore/BookDetail.aspx?BookId=SKU-000037209

I learn greatly by anything you write – whether that’s your personal journey, or general spiritual knowledge. The idea of this blog being a combination of the two appeals to me, but I’m pretty easy to please. Whatever you decide will be right. I just know it!
(PS – I say move to the coast of Maine, and then I’ll join you there in a year or two!)

Hi Megan,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and for always being so supportive. Your friendship is also greatly appreciated too.

My decision is to combine the two since it seems kind of obvious that they are connected. Plus, the majority of readers wanted it that way too. So you got your wish!

As for Maine, we shall see where the Universe will guide us. We still have no clue yet. :)

Hi there Nadia – I reckon combine ‘em!

Nadia – I’m just writing to thank you for being part of my blogging life in recent times – I am closing my blog. I have really appreciated your visits – it would have been great if we had met a little earlier in my blogging cycle! Thanks again – love from Rob

I’m a fan of combos.

It’s funny how things we seeks can stay elusive and just beyond reach, and when we stop seeking, it’s just there. Then again, it’s also ironic how what we resist, persists and we get what we focus on. I guess that’s why perspective changes everything.

Hi JD,

I think timing is a big factor is such situations. For when a person is ready to proceed on a journey, everything falls into place quite easily and we can see the road ahead with great clarity. In Buddhism, there is a quote that states that “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear”. That quote applies to all aspects of life. When we are ready to see another way of being, it comes when we are ready to undergo such changes. The Universe is forever merciful. :)

Nadia,
It is good to start reading you again intensively. You have accumulated so much wisdom to share when – “the student is ready..” Apart from Buddhism ( Lao Tzu -&63), I begin to sniff
some ideas from “New Age Thinking” as well as some elements from the New Awakening and
Opening our Third Eye issues in your’ Path’. Correct me if I am wrong. If there are any solutions in the World Hierarchy this is the way to go.

Nadia January 22, 2010 at 9:11 am

Hi Michael,

Long time, no talk! I hope that all is well. :)

Thank you for all the kind things you wrote. I don’t think of myself as a New Age thinker. Personally, I think to fully grasp spirituality, a person has to study all traditions. Of course, that is based on my experience of studying them all.

To me, Eastern thought provides the foundation for all the other spiritual traditions. All make a complete circle. Each tradition connects with another. Again, this is based on my studies and experience. Each person has to do what is right for them.

Ultimately, regardless of the tradition someone chooses, all rely on the importance of love. Be love and give love. For that is what life is all about in the end.

Hey Nadia,
I too would like to read your documentation on your previous journey. If possible, please send me a link. Thanks! You’re doing a great job, I wouldn’t mind reading both, whatever comes natural to you is what you should write about.

Thanks,
Tony
