Reflections on Past Choices

“Often we don’t listen to who we’re meant to be because we’re so busy trying to live out someone else’s ideas. But other people and their opinions hold no power in defining our destiny.”

 Oprah Winfrey

As you all know by now, I am currently in the process of aligning my outside life to my inner life. My goal is for my exterior reality to be in harmony with how I think and feel.

Ever since I made the decision to do this, the Universe has responded to my request in amazing ways. It again proves that once your intentions are made clear, everything you need will be sent your way. The key is to know what you want and to be serious about it. You can cheat yourself and you may be able to cheat others but you can never cheat the Universe. Why?

Because what you put out there whether it is a thought or a product or a feeling, the effect and energy of it will come right back to you. Karma does not just apply to how you interact with people…it applies to everything you put into the world. Nothing (and I mean nothing) goes unnoticed from a spiritual point of view.

So as I made a firm decision to harmonize my life, people and resources have been appearing in my life quite regularly. It has been very humbling for it has reminded me that the Universe/God is forever merciful.

I do want to share one recent encounter because it brought to my attention something which may have crossed your mind but had not crossed mine. About a week ago, I was talking to someone whom I had just recently met about my current situation. At some point during the course of the conversation, the fact that I had worked as a lawyer came up.

Working Woman

The person whom I was talking to made the comment that I must have liked something about that career since I chose it. The person’s point was that my job represented who I was on some level. To be candid, I understand why people think like that but that is not always the case. It definitely was not the case for me because I went to law school for all the wrong reasons.

Even though I have always wanted to help people, my reasons for going to law school were based on pressure and expectation. I justified it because I figured that it was one method to help those in need. As the Oprah Winfrey quote states above, I went to law school because of the community I was surrounded with at that time. The community I was in only valued professionals, anything else was considered failure.

Ironically, after my first year of law school, I knew it was not for me but I had no idea what else to do. So I stayed in it. Was this a mistake? Not at all for being in law school was a huge blessing. It was there that I met the teacher who introduced me to Buddhism and that began a journey which truly saved my life.

Also thanks to that experience, I learned about the power of the mind and that there are so many different ways to look at a situation and each perspective holds merit. Law school helped me to shape my mind and made me realize that being a professional was not my calling.

So even though I went there for all the wrong reasons and even though I have never worked as a traditional lawyer and even though I spent so much money to go….it was an important part of my life. It helped me to be where I am now. It made me a better person on so many levels.

One Indian avatar states the each human embodiment is an opportunity to cross off the list all the things you want to experience so that at the end, you realize that all that matters is Divine Love. We all have done things which when we look back on, we may cringe or view them with regret. Please do not do that.

Ocean

Things happen for reasons and there are no mistakes. Each experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. Each experience is a part of your journey and holds meaning even if it may not appear to be true. There are no accidents and the only mistake you can make is to not learn from each experience.

In order to create the life that you love, you have to take stock of where you have been and who you are. Each experience adds wisdom and with that wisdom you can create your ideal world.

Thanks to my journey, I am at a point where I know what I am good at and what I love to do. I will write more about this in my next post as well as about visualization because visualization is an important tool in creating the life that you desire.

Just remember, every single event holds meaning and happens for a reason. Nothing is random. Marianne Williamson states that even the cashier who checks you out at the store is destined to cross your path even though the interaction lasts only minutes.

Every day you are in places and in situations that are meant to help you. Even the people who annoy you are there for a reason. Don’t waste such experiences by complaining about life or ignoring what is happening around you.

Be present in your life for it is all you have right now and how you handle this moment will determine the next moments. And when you are in doubt as to what to do or how to act, just listen to your heart. It will guide you in the right direction.

Nadia,
I believe a real key is exactly what you shared at the end – it’s in listening to our heart that can make all the difference.

Even when we don’t though – and I know I have had my share of moments where I haven’t listened to my heart – this is still our life that we are creating. And there is something out there, in the moments of each and every day that are there for reasons we may not always see in that moment. And that’s okay, I believe. Maybe that reason will come to us later…or maybe the moment just is…or maybe we’ll draw upon it ten years later…or whatever. These moments become the makeup that makes us who we are today. and maybe we’re not always “happy” with every choice or circumstance. Still, though…it is us. It is what we have. And there is something there that makes us the unique and amazing person that we each are. And in that thought, I find so much belief in life and in living!

Hi Lance,

We all have had moments were we did not listen to our hearts. I know for myself that when I did not listen to my heart, eventually I was made aware that what my heart was saying was right. That is how we gain wisdom.

We learn from experiences and most definitely the reasons for certain moments may not be made clear until years later. I have had that happen in my life where something occurred that seemed so insignificant. Yet many years later, I realized that what happened definitely had meaning and purpose.

I always tell people we are the sum total of all our experiences and that sum total is who we are and there is a lot of beauty in that. We each are special. We each are beautiful. We each are awesome. We each have a purpose and every single one of us has a life that is meaningful. Life is truly beautiful and so are we! :)

Great point about how by expressing myself, the Universe is delivering good things to me. Makes sense to me and thank you so much for all the positive feedback! Hope all is awesome! :)

Hayden Tompkins January 17, 2010 at 9:26 am

It’s also important to remember that most people don’t really understand what it is to be an attorney. The person making the comment is acting like you made the decision to pursue a legal career knowing exactly what that meant. But the truth is that you were looking at it through the lens of a layman and thinking “Well, if I have to be a professional, maybe this is the way to go.”

But once you’ve invested so much energy into the lawyer thing (money, time, education) it can be very hard to let that go. Especially if you don’t know what else to do.

I’m glad that you were able to use that experience to your advantage!!

Hi Hayden,

That is a great point about what happened with that conversation. It just was funny to me how we make assumptions about why people do what they do. We really do not know someone until we talk to them and understand their reasoning.

And thank you so much for the supportive words. I always believe that there is a positive in any given situation.

Hope all is well! :)

lena January 17, 2010 at 10:35 am

I agree with everything you say and believe that everyone we meet and everything that happens in ours lives is there as a teacher. My drive in academic pursuits arose out of a desperate need to feel respected. While I love the subject areas that I studied, I pushed so hard for advanced degrees for wrong reasons. I came to realize that kindness is more important than intelligence and that self-respect does not come from academic letters after your name. It was an expensive lesson but well worth learning!!
.-= lena´s last blog ..Wickedly Good–A Night at The Academy =-.

Nadia January 17, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Hi Lena,

So many people want to be respected and often we seek that respect by getting advanced degrees. Let’s face it, society treats someone who is a doctor far differently than they treat someone who is a administrative assistant.

When I worked as an administrative assistant, the level of respect I was given was nill. Now when I was a lawyer, the same people treated me far better. It is a sad reflection of how some people think. However, as you so beautifull wrote, the respect that matters more is self-respect and only we can give that to ourselves. :)

Scott Webb January 20, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Nadia,

I believe this is seriously changing right now though. The MBA is losing out to the MFA, and the person that takes charge passionately. Problem is that most people are still in an old school of thought and think that administrative assistant is uneducated and working their only job. Behind the desk, the administrative assistant could be working a 4 month stretch to travel europe for another 6 months. Or they could be running their own small business blog after work and plan on quitting in a month.

This is why I love what’s happening right now. It’s as if a democratic renaissance is happening, giving everyone the opportunity to change their life towards what truly matters to them. Hopefully some people are already on track and doing what they love, but if not they can easily look to get back on track.

I say to never look at anyone and assume.

Nadia January 21, 2010 at 9:33 am

Hi Scott,

You are right, the times are changing. It is as if society is being divided into two tracks. One track is the old model of how things should be and another track is people taking charge of their lives and basing their choices on what they love.

Actually, a few months ago there was an article about how the current economical situation is encouraging people to go after their dreams or start a new career. Further proof that things have an interesting way of falling into place! :)

And yay for not assuming! We never know someone’s story until we talk to them and see things from their perspective.

Hope all is awesome!

Kim January 17, 2010 at 11:24 am

Thank you for this post. It really spoke to me today. I am in the process of making a big decision regarding a job that I am a quitting. The company is very determined to keep me and I need to decide whether to stay or go. It’s not a perfect job but I am doing something I love. Your post reminded me that I can use the imperfections to grow into more of the person I want to be. Thanks again!!

Nadia January 17, 2010 at 12:03 pm

Hi Kim,

You are most welcome! I am happy that this post spoke to you. Good for you for being in such a situation.

I know it is a hard one but look at it this way…your company is really determined to keep you. That says a lot about you and you should be proud of yourself. Just listen to your heart as to what to do. The fact that you are doing something that you love is such a blessing. You can take that opportunity and turn it into anything that you want. The choice and the power lies with you. If I can help in any way, just let me know. :)

Hilary January 17, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Hi Nadia .. I understand now – I rather wished my parents, teachers, co-workers, employers etc would have been able to have imparted this knowledge earlier in life – some parts of it .. I’m sure I could have learnt.

However as you say we are where we are for a reason .. that’s why I think a while ago someone asked what would we have liked to have done different with our lives – and we can never do that .. because we wouldn’t be here now.

I am learning so much from everyone and things are happening, panning out and life will get easier .. every connection – you never know why .. I heard from an American kid who was in the Acute Brain Injury Unit with Mum 2.75 years ago this week .. and I made and continued that contact .. it’s an inspiring world & she was so chuffed to hear about Mum (Hardwick Mum’s pet dog) and loved the recent photos I posted in December .. it’s heart warming – we usually talk when I’m over – but this time she rang me on my birthday. Brings tears tomy eyes .. her Mum is lawyer in Lexington! I could be like my brothers who have no idea who the staff are, or the patients – they both ignore others .. I just can’t believe it – but there it is! A different world from me to them.

Go well – have a good week – looking foward to the visualisation post ..

Hi Hilary,

As you so wisely wrote, there is no need to ponder what we would have done differently in the past because we cannot change the past. We can only control the moment and we just learn from our experiences. That is why we have them.

And yay for learning so much from everyone! That is wonderful and that is so nice that your friend from a couple of years ago contacted you on your birthday. Happy Belated Birthday! I hope you had a nice one. :)

You just never know how things will pan out. As for what you wrote about family, I have friends who feel more like family to me than some of my relatives who are blood related.

Have a good week too! And yes, the visualization post will be available this Thursday!

Sami - Life, Laughs & Lemmings January 17, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Hi Nadia. I can relate to your story. I went into marketing, mainly because I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career and I liked being creative. It took me about a week of university to realise it wasn’t for me and 3 years of university + 5 years of working in the field to get out of it!

At first I wished I’d gotten out sooner but my marketing skills have served me well over the years and like you, I now know it happened that way for a reason.

Evita January 17, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Hello Nadia

And yet again I find that our paths seem to be running parallel in so many ways. I so wholeheartedly agree and live with the no regrets paradigm, as I know that everything and I mean everything that happens is perfect – a blessed, precious gift in itself. I live by the thought that we are always exactly where we are supposed to be.

I know many people feel this way or that way about life and their surroundings, but I think this stems too from the fact that many of us do not realize that we may not always get what we want, but we always get what we need at a specific point in time. It is only after we connect to our soul and spirit and align the physical with that, that we see that what we have is always in our life through our own creation for our own growth and further evolution.

It is thus a pleasure to join you on this journey of further alignment this year….I am feeling a similar call and will be writing about it shortly as well.
.-= Evita´s last blog ..Redefining Success: Why I Quit My Job =-.

Nadia January 18, 2010 at 9:15 am

Hi Evita,

The interesting thing about those who take spiritual journeys is that inevitably we all have to go through similar experiences in order to gain the same wisdom. The journeys just look different.

Based on all the experiences that I have had, I know at any given moment we are provided with what we need for that particular moment. And often I have seen that what I thought I wanted was not good for me or not what I truly wanted deep down inside me.

I look forward to reading your post about your similar call to align your inner life with your outer life. :)

And thank you for saying you’ll stop by again. :)

Hi Sonia,

I was initiated into the Ramakrishna Order and almost became a nun of that Order. My studies were in Vedanta and Buddhism.

However, I realized that my desire to experience marriage was something I could not give up. So as a result of that along with years of being on a spiritual path, I know a lot about Indian culture and history. I also enjoy the food…especially dosas. :)

As for the comments being closed on older posts, I had to do that due to spammers. It is a long story.

I am happy you are enjoying my blog! Have a great rest of the day! :)

Tim January 18, 2010 at 12:07 am

Hi Nadia:

I enjoyed your post and your take on the Universe responding to our intentions. I also liked what you said about there being no mistakes – no regrets. This totally aligns with my attitude about learning lessons and our continued growth. I will admit that I occasionally catch myself with thoughts about regret now and then. But your post is a nice reminder to STOP this. Oh, your song/video is so appropriate for your post and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing more of what your going through…I can really sense, on a grand scale, that there are a lot of us trying to “figure things out” and its a big help, especially now, to read your post. Have a great weekend!

Hi Tim,

Glad you liked the post. We learn through experiences and sometimes those experiences are not what the world would consider as success. The key is to take what ever wisdom we can and just learn. None of us are perfect and none of us know all the answers.

As for sharing my journey, it is fun and I am happy that it helps because I know I am not alone in this process of having my outer life reflect my inner life.

So many wonderful things are happening as a result of all of this. And that song is one of my many favorites. :)

Lisa (mommymystic) January 18, 2010 at 10:31 am

Nadia – like others here, I can definitely relate to this post. My favorite part was when you said that you had met the individual who introduced you to Buddhism and thus launched your ‘conscious’ spiritual journey in this lifetime in law school. Who would have expected that? When I look back, I see that so many of the experience that I labeled ‘difficult’ taught me the most. My own corporate career helped me develop my personal power in a way that I desperately needed at the time, among other things…Thanks for another great post..-lisa
.-= Lisa (mommymystic)´s last blog ..Meditation: How Often and How Long? =-.

Nadia January 18, 2010 at 11:23 am

Hi Lisa,

I am still friends with the teacher who introduced me to Buddhism and I always tell her that the whole reason I went to law school (spiritually speaking) was to meet her because Buddhism truly changed my life around for the better. Kind of funny that it took law school to do that but the Universe works in interesting ways.

You are also right to say that difficult situations are usually the ones we learn most from in life. I think it is because we have to face certain hardships and experiences which cause us to look at things from different angles.

And that is wonderful that you can see how your corporate experiences shaped your life! Yay! :)

Hope all is awesome!

Angie January 18, 2010 at 11:36 am

Hi Nadia! I am really enjoying reading about your journey and transformation! I usually read your blog early in the morning on my blackberry so I have not been able to leave a comment.
I wanted to log on this morning though, and leave you a note to let you know that your posts have really inspired me even though I have not had a chance to publicly respond for some time.
It is so inspiring and rewarding for me to hear about your inner work- I can see you growing and transforming before my eyes! It is really wonderful. The last few months I have taken some time to evaluate, and not do the things that I feel that are not benefiting me mentally, physically and spiritually- and in their place, add in things that are:) As a result I don’t read nearly as many blogs. I wanted you to know though, that I always make the time to read your posts, and I always learn something from your journey.

Hugs!

Good for your for doing your own transformation! That is wonderful! So much of life is a matter of timing and when we are ready to take the next steps, we are guided as to how to do it. Life works in interesting ways and each way is merciful.

As for my re-alignment process, it has been amazing so far. I am so grateful for all that has been happening. Just confirms to me that when you are true to yourself and follow your heart, the Universe responds in ways that are just mind blowing!

It was great to hear from you! :)

I feel the same way about the public school teaching I did. Via my second assignment I met my husband. I cannot imagine my life without him, and obviously without our child.

I too am with you every step of the way on your journey to inner harmony and life alignment. Isn’t blogging just The Best?? How we have all connected through this amazing medium and watch each other evolve? What a blessing to share each others’ lives and journeys this way.

Journals and journeys! “Journaled journeys,” perhaps? In a public forum. Cool.

“Be present in your life for it is all you have right now and how you handle this moment will determine the next moments. And when you are in doubt as to what to do or how to act, just listen to your heart. It will guide you in the right direction. ” Perfect Nadia, perfect! This past week I have been wrestling with a few decisions. With great clarity, the word surrender popped into my mind, that’s truly it for me–surrender to what I know and let my heart lead. The only time “problems” arise is when I let other’s doubts or opinions direct my own. I have come to accept that I live in an unconventional way, and I’m learning to accept that is quite okay, because when I follow my heart I am truly happy.
This moment truly does determine the next…so I try to be most mindful and do the best I can with this moment I am in, and be most grateful for all that is in it.

Nadia January 18, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Hi Joy,

Yay for living in an unconventional way! :) We have to be true to who we are because ultimately we are each responsible for how we choose to live. There is no need to be something we are not.

By the way, whenever I ignored my heart, I was always reminded that it was right in the first place. :)

Hi Nadia,

This business of aligning the outer with the inner is a tough one, and then sometimes it comes together in surprising ways. It is something that I’m dealing with as well. My lesson has to been to allow, with love.

Most of my life, before I had a shift in consciousness, was based on pressure and expectation and conditioning. Some people will tend to see us from the choices we made in the past.

Listening to the heart is the key. We can hear it if we clear the mind. When we can hear it, whatever is needed shows up.

Thanks, everything you said here is very resonant.

k

Nadia January 19, 2010 at 9:25 am

Hi Kaushik,

Aligning the outer with the inner is an interesting process. Actually, I think it has been happening within me for some time but I was not ready to see it. Once I got to the point where I just was ready, everything started snowballing. One sign lead to another sign and then I was fully able to grasp what was being shown to me.

Once I fully saw that I need to have my outer life reflect my inner life, a sense of calm came and with that calm, I was able to see what I want to change. That mere shift made the total difference. For then, the road ahead became visible.

So we each have our own process and journey to reach that alignment. :)

Laura Hegfield January 18, 2010 at 9:52 pm

As always Nadia you are so right on with this post. I went to school to study textile design and while there met my first yoga teacher…a huge stepping stone on my spiritual journey…I learned so much about seeing…noticing…paying attention as a design student…and then yoga took that exterior observation and taught me to look inward. I also found out after my first textile job that that wasn’t what I wanted to do (exactly). Together these two seemingly diverse paths…art and yoga have woven together in surprising ways in my life. All the experiences together carve us like the precious, Divine gems we are.

Hi Nadia! I LOVE your posts! You are so right about people making assumptions about why we might have done, or not done something in our lives. Years ago I did that too. In fact, I used to be an angry little warrior that I “wasted” so much time on this or that, it was a common quip I’d make “Well THAT sure was a waste of time!”

How nice to be in my sunset years and see the connections (in hindsight of course) of everything I did, and the people who were in my life at the time. NONE of it was a waste of time. I have absolutely NO regrets – it has all been writing the song of suZen and, like the song of Nadia, it’s all in tune………at last!

You were an angry little warrior? I was one too when I was in the midst of all my drama. I was angry at myself and thought I had made bad choices. Then I read “A Return to Love” and that was a HUGE eye opener. It made me realize things happen for reasons and sometimes I may not know the reason for years. Good Morning Nadia!

This paragraph really jumped out at me, “Things happen for reasons and there are no mistakes. Each experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. Each experience is a part of your journey and holds meaning even if it may not appear to be true. There are no accidents and the only mistake you can make is to not learn from each experience.”

Each experience IS an opportunity to learn and grow…thank you for this wonderful way to start my day today!

Hi Peggy,

Good Morning! :)

So much of life boils down to perception and if we see the possibilities of each experience then we can do wonders. We may not see the possibilities right away but eventually we do! :)

On my blog, I have a tagline with the word: inter-alignment. The intent is to make both my inner and outer lives harmonious and congruent with one another. I haven’t got a chance to write my whole spill on the word “inter-alignment”, which I hope to come to soon. Like your own experiences, it has been amazing what resources show up with making the intent. There is also no lack of inspired ideas; only which ones to pick! All the best to your journey!

Hi Evelyn,

That is also a great way to describe it…interalignment. I hope you do write about it because I would love to read how you define it.

Thank you so much for the well wishes. Ever since I made the decision to change my outer life so that it matches my inner life, so many wonderful things have happened. The Universe is truly very merciful. :)

Looking forward to following this series. Ahhh, the power of NOW! Reminds me of a clip from peaceful warrior

“There’s never nothing going on. Take out the trash Dan. The trash is anything that’s keeping you from the only thing that matters, this moment, here, now.”

Hi Jared,

Thank you for the support! “Peaceful Warrior” is such a great movie. I remember that scene.

All that matters is the moment yet so many of us are either dwelling in the past or in the future. May more and more of us realize the beauty of the present!

Hope all is awesome! :)

Dearest Nadia,

This post is dear to my heart, both the element of trusting our desire to “leap” and knowing that the Great Universe will provide. I have lived so much of my life in this way, and as a result have lived a very unusual life. I walked away from college and all I’d ever known and went into one of the wildest places on Earth. My life has never been the same since.

It did me good to hear you talking about your life experience. You are truly such a unique individual. One I resonate strongly with. I believe we can live lives of greatness when we listen to and trust our hearts. We see EVERYTHING around us and EVERYTHING that happens to us as not only a lesson, but PART of us. There is great peace in that.

Thank you for this very heartfelt and endearing post. I particularly needed it today. I’ve had little time for blogging due to work on my book, and reading this just left me feeling soothed and more whole. But then you always affect me that way.

Much love to you Nadia; your soul is soooooooooo beautiful.
Robin

Nadia January 21, 2010 at 9:31 am

Hi Robin,

People are just mirrors for one another. So all that you wrote about me applies to you too! You are a beautiful soul and like you, I know what it is like to walk the unusual path.

The interesting thing about the heart versus mind issue is that whenever I ignored my heart and followed my mind, I quickly realized the mistake I had made. Following and listening to our hearts always leads us in the right direction. We just need to decipher if what we are hearing is truly our heart or what we think is our heart. People often confuse desires with language of the heart and they are not the same.

So here’s to a wonderful journey ahead for the two of us. You with your book and me with my stuff! Yay for us! :)

Much love right back to you!

Zeenat{Positive Provocations} January 21, 2010 at 1:12 am

Dearest Nadia,
I love your thoughts here. It just goes to show that everything and everyone are exactly where they are supposed to be. WOW! If only we all just digested and savored that fact..perspective, bad moods and everything negative would certainly turn positive. We could all view each experience as a learning one and grow from it rather than get agitated and upset.
This is one fact that has given me certain sense of calm in the past one year….I have come to love accept and understand the Universe’s plans for me. And believe me, when i just let it happen or go with the flow ….beautiful positivity just embraces me…
And as you are going to talk about visualization next time….I have been practicing it for 14 years and it has helped me miraculously..not just with me..but with my patients. The healing that comes forth from it is truly Divine!

Nadia January 21, 2010 at 9:34 am

Hi Zeenat,

Life has a beautiful way of taking us places and having us experience certain things in an effort to help us grow. The key is to be fully in the moment and to know that where you are is where you are supposed to be. Things happen for reasons and sometimes we might not know the reason until years later.

The Universe/God is compassionate and there is an order to things. We just have to open our eyes to that reality instead of being stuck in our pain.

And cool on the visualizing. I am a big believer in it too. It is a very powerful tool that can be used by anyone! :)

Melissa Kirk January 28, 2010 at 6:57 pm

Hi Nadia – Thank you for this. I LOVE the idea of having the intention of aligning our inner and outer worlds. That’s such a great way to put it and I always forget to think that way.

I’m taking the Awakening Joy course with james Baraz (www.awakeningjoy.info) and we had our first class last night. he told a story of meeting a powerful teacher who was said to be able to grant your every wish, and he talked about hesitating in meeting her because he wanted to get that wish absolutely right. He didn’t way what hi wish was in the class, but he challenged us to think of what we would wish for if we could get our deepest, dearest wish. Mine surprised me but made me happy and felt so right. So your post reminded me to go back and manifest that wish so that I can make it come true, and by doing that, I will be aligning my inner and outer worlds.

Blessings to you-

Melissa

Hi Melissa,

Sounds like a very cool class! Thank you so much for sharing that story with us.

Wishes can come true…we just need to do our part and then the Universe will take care of the rest.

So much of life is dependent on timing and sometimes we have to experience certain things in order to get to the place where we can then achieve our dreams.

For me, the time has come to align my outer life with my inner life. It has been a wonderful realization!

And have fun making your dream come true! If I can help, let me know! :)
